Cow slaughter triggers violent protests in Himachal

    Shimla
    • Violent protests erupted Friday in villages of Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district over the slaughtering of a cow, police said. A mosque and a few shops that were open were attacked.
    • 'More than 4,000 people from various villages gathered at Nerwa (in Chopal tehsil of Shimla district) this (Friday) morning to lodge their protest over the cow slaughtered by a member of a minority community in a village Thursday,' Superintendent of Police R.M. Sharma told IANS. Nerwa is 120 km from Shimla.

The protesters later turned violent and damaged a madrasa at Kothar village near Nerwa, breaking its windowpanes and setting furniture on fire. A mosque at Nerwa was also attacked and a motorcycle set afire.

The shops were closed as a mark of protest and the mob also attacked and damaged some shops that were open.

    • State BJP spokesman Ashok Kapatia condemned the rioting and demanded action against the people responsible for the violence. Leader of the opposition Vidya Stokes too condemned the incident.
    • 'Abdul was arrested last (Thursday) evening. He killed the cow in a fit of rage as it was not giving milk for more than three years. Early (Friday) morning, five others who were involved in the incident were arrested. They all belonged to a Gujjar family,' Sharma said.

Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other Hindu organisations have called for a 'bandh' (shutdown) in Shimla from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

This has been for the first time that violence against a minority community occurred since the state came into being.

Japanese Split on Exposing Secret Pacts With U.S. - NYTimes.com

    • TOKYO
    • They were Tokyo’s worst-kept diplomatic secrets: clandestine cold war era agreements with Washington that obligated Japan to shoulder the costs of United States bases and allow nuclear-armed American ships to sail into Japanese ports.
    • Bunroku Yoshino admitted lying about military treaties.
    • The new administration in Tokyo, whose election last summer ended a half-century of nearly unbroken control by the Liberal Democrats, wants to expose the treaties as a showcase of its determination to sweep aside the nation’s secretive, bureaucrat-dominated postwar order. Last fall, the foreign minister appointed a team of scholars to scour Japanese diplomatic archives for evidence of the treaties. Its findings are due this month.

Why Pranab should read Singh's 1991 speech - dnaindia.com

    • R Jagannathan
    R Jagannathan
    • Manmohan said: “We have been at the edge of a precipice since December, 1990, and more so since April, 1991… Due to the combination of unfavourable internal and external factors, the inflationary pressures on the price level have increased very substantially since mid-1990. The people of India have to face double-digit inflation which hurts most the poorer sections of our society.” This time around, Pranab can take these sentences verbatim and change the dates. We have seen double-digit inflation last year, and will probably see it again this year.
    • Talking about public sector investments, Manmohan said: “The public sector has not been managed in a manner so as to generate large investible surpluses.” Pranab can take this line, but he will not blame the UPA’s bankrupt policies for it.Air India is sick. The oil companies are living on doles of government bonds. Telecom is booming, but public sector BSNL and MTNL are in decline. And this is not an exhaustive list.

... Donation Paypal Code for Blogs

  • tags: no_tag
