    • "God resides in cow dung," says Kesari Gumat, as he walks through his laboratory where researchers mix bovine excreta with medicinal herbs and monitor beakers of simmering cow urine.

      The lab in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad is one of a growing number of research centres which have embraced the sacred status of cows in India and sought to push it to a new level.

      Promoting the practical alongside the spiritual, they have developed a line of dung- and urine-based medicines which they say can cure a whole herd of ailments from bad breath to cancer.

    • "It might seem that all we do is collect cow excreta to make medicines but it is not so easy," Gandhi told AFP.

      "We have to serve the cow on a minute-to-minute basis," said Gandhi who personally feeds his charges on grass dipped in milk, herbs with unrefined cane sugar and water containing essential salts.

      He also sings to them.

    • ommunal tension continues to prevail in Aurangabad following the collapse of a minaret.
    • During Holi, mosques are covered by canvas as a precautionary measure to prevent the structure from being spoilt by artificial colours.


      Muslims agitated on seeing one of two minarets in a collapsed state. They claimed Hindus had damaged it during Holi celebrations.
    • A Muslim cleric, however, claimed that the minaret could have collapsed itself, as it was not strongly built.

      "For the safety of Masjid (mosque) during Holi, we had put up curtains at the entrance gate. The pillars at the gate, which was not strongly built, must have collapsed due to strong winds," said Maulana Mujeebullah, a Muslim cleric.
    • Aurangabad's Police Commissioner Srikanth Savakar said:"The structure was constructed only with a pipe and not with the concrete due to which the pillar must have collapsed. There is no need to blame anyone or insult anyone."

    • India has just launched a plan to spend $361 million over the next several years on roads and rail links in the terai, announcing the grants just before Nepali President Ram Baran Yadav made his Feb. 15 official visit to New Delhi. China, meanwhile, recently increased its annual aid to Nepal by 50% to about $22 million.
    • China's main interest in Nepal has always been led by its concerns over Tibet, which has been ruled by China since 1950. Beijing's involvement with Nepal grew much more intense after the March 2008 ethnic Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule, which deeply embarrassed the Beijing government on the eve of its expensive Olympic Games. There are an estimated 20,000 Tibetans living in Nepal but, with China pushing Nepal to tighten its border with Tibet, the number of new refugees reaching Nepal has dropped to about 500 from an annual figure of around 2,500. But it too has increased its focus on economic ties — trade between China and Nepal has quadrupled since 2003. This week, China said it would restart the tourist bus route between the Tibetan capital Lhasa and Nepal's capital Kathmandu. It had suspended the service in 2006.

    • Almost everyone who’s lived in India has played Holi, the festival of colours, at least once in his or her lifetime. But Vivek Oberoi, surprisingly, hadn’t until on Monday when he celebrated the festival with the poor children in Vrindavan.

      “I really liked it. I played Holi for the first time in my life. Today I really enjoyed playing it with flowers along with these children. They applied colours on me and make me dance on the banks of river Yamuna. Even I played with them and applied colours to them,” Oberoi is quoted as saying by a news agency.

      The actor, often associated with various charitable dos, added that it felt good to bring smiles to the faces of the destitute kids.
