  • tags: no_tag

Unrest in Xinjiang: Where’s the Muslim outrage? | csmonitor.com

    • China also closed mosques last week – just one of many strict limits on freedom of expression in Xinjiang.

It’s the kind of stuff that would arouse passionate protests if a Western country were the one cracking down. (Remember the apoplectic protests over the Danish cartoon of Prophet Muhammad?)

But there were no Chinese flags burned in Karachi. No effigies of Hu Jintao smoldered in Cairo. No “Death to China” chants echoed through the streets of Tehran.

    • The Uighurs’ spiritual leader, Rebiya Kadeer (profiled here by the Monitor’s Beijing Bureau Chief Peter Ford), has some ideas.

“So far the Islamic world is silent about the Uighurs’ suffering because the Chinese authorities have been very successful in [their] propaganda to the Muslim world … that the Uighurs are extremely pro-west Muslims - that they are modern Muslims, not genuine Muslims,” she said at a press conference Monday in Washington.

Murshidabad village pins faith on old harmony after flare-up

    Violence
    • Trimohini (Murshidabad):
    • In spite of the communal flare-up on Friday, many families from both the communities in Trimohini village vow they would not betray mutual faith and bond built over long years.

The village, with a population of 10,000, is home to more than two dozen Hindu families. The families, though tense, are insisting that their Muslim friends are their saviours at this point of time.

    • “We don’t know when our school will re-open. I don’t know why this has happened. Only thing we know is our seniors were asking students to put their signature to reduce the time of Friday prayers,” said Raihan Mondal. Raihan, along with his friend Saheen Raja, also talked about their Hindu friends like Anupam Pramanik and Shouvik Vajpayee with whom they played cricket at school.
    • The headmaster of Jhoubona High School, Balaram Halder, says he never imagined anything of this nature would erupt out of a small incident of giving extra time to Muslim students during Friday prayers.
    • According to the authorities, it was because of the rumour going around that things went out of control.

“A rumour was doing the rounds in the village that Hindus were about to attack them. Since the RAF men were dressed in black, the villagers thought they were outsiders and tried to obstruct them,” said Chanchal Biswas, the BDO of Nowda block.
