Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan - RSS for renewing ‘Hindutva’ ideology in BJP
- India’s ultra-Hindu nationalist grouping the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is lending some 500 young ‘pracharaks’ (full-time preachers) to the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to ingrain the ‘Hindutva’ ideological plank from which it is drifting away.
- The selected crew will be tasked with implementing a three-year revival agenda for the BJP that the RSS thinks necessary to put it back to the basics of the Hindutva principles latest by 201.

Modern manners help transform India's ritual past

But rites are becoming more sophisticated among the cashed-up middle classes. Modern beauty treatments - from manicures to day spas - are in huge demand in the lead-up to the festival.
Some women even have pre-festival cosmetic surgery. Beauty salons in the northern city of Chandigarh reported an unprecedented rush for Botox, filler injections, skin peeling and other cosmetic makeovers. One plastic surgeon had a 100 per cent increase in clients on Karva Chauth eve.
Once the preserve of married women, Karva Chauth is now being celebrated by the unmarried too.
These brides-to-be fast in the hope of finding a good man. ''Getting a good and supportive life partner is challenge these days,'' said Karishna, a young woman on the fast.
- In a push for gender equity, some husbands now join their wives on the fast.
- One of Kiran's customers, Kandna Makkar, said she and her husband fasted together. ''It's a symbol of our love,'' she said.
- This year, gay men have gone public about how they observe the fast of Karva Chauth for their partners.
- For many, the chauvinist overtones of Karva Chauth seem to be overshadowed by its romance.

VHP cancels programme on 20th year of temple movement
-
- The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has cancelled the 'shila pujan' programme scheduled to be held next month to mark the 20th year of Ram temple movement, a VHP spokesman said.
VHP top leadership decided that they were not going to hold any programme in Ayodhya related to the Ram temple movement for the next one year, VHP's local spokesman Sharad Sharma said.
The Hindu outfit had announced celebration on the twenty years of the movement by organising 'shila pujan' -- a three-day gathering of VHP activists in Ayodhya, on November 9, 10 and 11, 2009.
The decision to cancel the proposed programme was taken after a joint meeting of VHP chief Ashok Singhal and Mahant Gyan Das, the national convener of Dharam Rakcha Manch (religion defence forum), decided to organise this programme on the national level in Ayodhya a year later, Sharma said.

The Telegraph - Calcutta (Kolkata) | Nation | High court PIL raises caste certificate dispute
- Cuttack
- A tribal group’s fight against fake caste certificates in Kandhamal is in the centre of a high court dispute over government’s power to prevent Schedule Caste people from taking Schedule Tribe reservation benefits and Christians taking advantages meant for Hindus.
- The cases apparently raise questions on the government’s adherence to a law according to which, a Hindu Scheduled Caste person loses his caste identity after changing his or her religion. However, a Hindu tribal could continue to avail benefit of an ST even after converting into any other religion.

Who Brought Freedom, Gandhi or Netaji? - Other Authors | hindujagruti.org
- Recent research shows that Netaji Subhas Bose and the INA were responsible for the British leaving in 1947 in a hurry. The Fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942 rather than Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India Movement was the beginning of the end of the British Empire. Dr. N.S. Rajaram finds out more.
- I had occasion to visit some people who had served with my late father during World War II. Their account of their experience in the period from 1942 to 45 casts serious doubt on this beautiful story. Here we are faced with a dilemma— the conflict between what we read in history books and what the people actually saw on the ground. The usual story is that after some initial reverses the British defeated the Japanese. But those who actually served there, now in their late 70s and 80s, remember it quite differently. Uniformly, this is what I heard everywhere and from everyone.
- “When the Japanese attacked, the British ran away. They were very clever. They had a wonderful life with bungalows and butlers and cooks and all that, but as soon as the Japanese came, they ran away. And once they got back to India, they sent Gurkhas, Sikhs, Marathas and other Indians to fight the Japanese. They knew it was too dangerous for them. That is how we got independence in Malaya.” Malaysia was then called Malaya and Singapore was its capital.
- “That is why the British left India also. When the war was over, all the Indian soldiers who had defeated the Japanese returned to India, and the British got scared. They didn’t want to fight the Indians who had just fought and defeated the Japanese. So they ran away from India also.”
- The year 1942 was momentous. It was the year in which the British Empire suffered a massive defeat at the hands of an Asiatic people (Japanese); it was also the year in which Mahatma Gandhi launched his famous but ill-fated Quit India Movement. Subhas Bose also entered the picture at about that time, first in Germany and later in Southeast Asia. But first it is necessary to get an idea of the momentous impact of the Japanese victory on the psyche of the colonized people as well as on that of the colonizing powers. What triggered it was the Fall of Singapore.
- In the fall of Singapore, its symbolic significance was infinitely greater than the military defeat. It destroyed the myth of European superiority over the Asiatics once and for all.
- After the War, the British defeat in Singapore was followed by the French defeat in Dien Bien Phu at the hands of Ho Chi Min’s soldiers in Vietnam. This laid the groundwork for the American defeat in all of Vietnam and their inglorious flight from Saigon. No one today talks about the superiority of the ‘White Race’. The first nail in coffin was driven by the Japanese in Malaya in 1942.
- It was this changed perception, that the British were just ordinary mortals like the rest that allowed Netaji Subhas Bose to recruit Indians in Southeast Asia into the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauz or the INA). Subhas Bose saw that the Indian armed forces were the prop of the Empire— not just in India but everywhere the British went. But Gandhi and Nehru, preoccupied with their utopian dreams of nonviolence failed to realize its significance. When the opportunity arose, Bose seized it to transform the armed forces into a nationalist force, while Gandhi and Nehru started the Quit India Movement which collapsed in a few weeks.
- Another point worth noting: after the fall of Singapore that ended the British Empire, the most dramatic national event was the INA Trial at the Red Fort— not any movement by Gandhi or Nehru. This led to the mutiny of the naval ratings, which, more than anything helped the British make up their minds to leave India in a hurry. They sensed that it was only a matter of time before the mutiny spread to other parts of the armed forces and the Government. None of this would have happened without Subhas Bose and the INA.
- The crucial point to note is that thanks to Subhas Bose’s activities, the Indian Armed Forces began to see themselves as defenders of India rather than of the British Empire. This, more than anything else, was what led to India’s freedom. This is also the reason why the British Empire disappeared from the face of the earth within an astonishingly short space of twenty years. Indian soldiers, who were the main prop of the Empire, were no longer willing to fight to hold it together. This is the essence of leadership.

* VivekaJyoti *: Religious Profiling: Congress Govt asks public and private sector companies for religion-based headcount of employees
-
- The Centre will ask public and private sector companies to do a religion-based headcount of their employees as part of an effort to end discrimination.
The companies will be requested to prepare a database that will have all details of their staff, including religion and caste, minority affairs ministry sources said.
- The current move is part of the build-up towards the constitution of an Equal Opportunity Commission to stop discrimination. “Although this is being done with really good intentions, this can be easily misunderstood. So we are being very cautious,’’ a ministry official said.
- The ministry is now lending the final touches to the Equal Opportunity Commission Bill, to be tabled in the next session of Parliament. The commission will check discrimination based on sex, religion, caste, race, birthplace, descent and language, and will have court-like powers.

India Retold: CHINA AND INDIA: COMPETITION OF CIVILISATIONS
- The Chinese, like the Indians, have historically not been a conquering race; they too have been invaded and conquered; they too have survived the onslaughts. And, like the Phoenix, they have risen again. But this time, they are apprehensive. They are alive to the fact that religion-generated clashes of civilisations and cultures demand dumping of traditional tools of response. They have also learnt from the West that, in the changed global scenario, a nation cannot protect itself and its interests by looking within and fighting its potential enemies on its soil. Wars must be fought and won on enemy territory or the high seas. That is why they are furiously arming themselves to the teeth and seeking to dominate areas and countries well beyond their real borders; the more the padding, the safer the mainland.
- Above all, the Chinese can see that, for the first time in history, they have a real chance of becoming the greatest power on earth. And they are going full blast to achieve that objective.
- That is where India comes in as a painful thorn. They know that India is still not interested in conquering any lands. They are aware that India will never impose its culture on them or anyone else in an offensive, exclusivist manner. They can also see that the India of the present is an underachiever only because its trying hard to disown its own cultural genius and blindly ape the West.

A white American girl who is married to an Indian guy blogs about her experiences and advise relating to cross cultural marriages, carrying interesting and original articles about a subject hugely relevant to all of us. She also discusses religion in many posts. Here she describes how she went from being an atheist to considering herself an “Atheist Hindu”.
The self description of this blog is "Musings of an ethnically English follower of Sanatan Dharma". This blog gives the author’s various experiences and thoughts as he explores Hinduism. I enjoyed nearly all the posts. A particularly interesting one was: "Why don't Christian missionaries target Britain rather than India?"
This blog belongs to Jennifer Kumar, a lady who spent a lot of time in India, and has been maintaining this website since 1997. Some of the posts I really liked were "108 Aspects of Wealth - Lakshmi's many attributes" and "The Stories of Diwali from different parts of India".
A very regularly updated blog on spirituality, religion and culture. No social or political issues. Dates of Navratri this year and a news article about scentists trying to work out which herb was used to revive Lakshmana in the Ramayana are two recent posts that Hindu Voice UK readers may find relevant. "Hindu Concept of the Beginning and End of the Universe" is also very interesting.
5) Divine India - The Spiritual Nation
Although marred by some poorly placed "in your face adverts" I was impressed and deeply interested to read the biographies of yogis, philosophers and saints, some of whom I had not heard of before. Really brought home the sheer number of great mystics that have come from India. Some recent biographies are of J. Krishnamurthi and Ramgopal Mazumdar, the "sleepless saint".

The myth of "1000 years of Hindu slavery"
-
Hindu Voice UK - The Hindu Perspective
- M. R. Vaghela
- One thousand years of slavery. Millennia of defeat and domination caused by a dogmatic adherence to the doctrine of ahimsa, preventing an effective resistance to foreign domination. This is what most Hindus are brought up to believe about their history.
- However some thoughts rankled in my mind. If the Hindus were truly slaves for a thousand years plus, then how have we survived to this day with dignity and honour and with a spiritual tradition stretching back to the mists of time and beyond?
- So 150 years of effective rule by the Muhamadans and 90 years of British rule was suddenly expanded into ‘one thousand years of slavery’ an utterly absurd contention is being bandied about like an absolute truth but has failed to hide the facts that remain unaltered in history.
- Ancient faiths like Buddhism and Zoroasterism were almost obliterated from the Middle East, Central Asia and India but the Hindus rose in defiance to emerge even stronger at the end of the blood soaked millennia.
