  • The tone and tenor of Arun Kumar’s presentation, as per the understanding of people present at the meeting, from whom I later tried to garner information, indicated an almost-overt  though still indirect support to the so-called ‘peace process.’ It was construed as an attempt to secure even a piece-meal return of Kashmiri Hindus to the Valley, in order to demonstrate the return of ‘normalcy.’ What upset and irked the listeners most was his expression (actually a kind of insistence) that Kashmiri Hindus have to make this sacrifice in the ‘national interest’ (phir se Balidan dene ke liye taiyaar ho jaiye).

     

    By design or coincidence, Arun Kumar’s visit took place the very same day that Yasin Malik reiterated his commitment to the struggle for Independent Jammu & Kashmir and ‘advised’ Kashmiri Hindus to return and join the Kashmiri Muslims in the valley! That same day, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also hinted at the unfolding of the return plan. This convergence of views of RSS officials at the ground in Jammu & Kashmir, the separatist leaders, and the State Government, is intriguing to say the least.

     

    In retrospect, the presence of Madhu Kishwar, a known supporter of a Hindu ‘compromise’ in Jammu & Kashmir, at the Jan. 19. Exodus Day function at Constitution Club in New Delhi, organized by RSS think tank, Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Foundation, reeks of an ugly synchronicity.

  • Some senior RSS activists in Jammu aver that Kishwar’s presence was at the instance of the RSS Prant Pracharak in Jammu, and if voices doing the rounds here are true, then the RSS here wanted to signal to the Prime Minister’s Office that it is aligned in favour of the PM’s perspective on the peace process as well as return of Kashmiri Hindus, even though these have been rejected outright by the community and the nationalist people in Jammu & Kashmir.

  • This approach has a wider ideological connotation, which I shall try to elucidate with an example. During the course of my interactions with RSS activists in Jammu, Pracharak Arun Kumar was ruffled and angry when Union Home Minister P Chidambaram declared his ‘Quiet Dialogue’ with the separatists.

     

    Kumar insisted with his colleagues in the RSS to mobilize for an agitation on the lines of the Sri Amarnath land restoration movement. But after being called to Delhi for a briefing, he returned a different man and began to advocate a mainly academic approach to the policy of compromise unfolding in Jammu & Kashmir. The directive to him was perhaps on the lines of - Make noises but do not involve in building public resistance.

    
    The process of dividing Jammu to carve out Greater Kashmir is now clearly unfolding. When the resolution to carve out Chenab Valley Hill Council was passed in the upper house of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislature, the BJP MLAs ignored it. When the Prime Minister hinted about a final settlement on Jammu & Kashmir, BJP legislators in Jammu did not even indulge in symbolic breast-beating.

  • It is also pertinent that though the BSF and the CRPF have been unfurling the flag on Republic Day and Independence Day, one never sees officials of Jammu & Kashmir Police, not even the closest police station SHO, attend it? True, the official Government function takes place in Bakshi Stadium, but that does not mean that hoisting the flag at the Lal Chowk Clock Tower is unconstitutional or not within the parameters of Indian democracy.

    This abject negation of a ceremony so pregnant with the symbolism of the Republic cannot be without an ulterior motive. Behind the façade of untruth are murmurs that point a finger at the corridors of power. Indeed, the courage of men involved in counter terror operations is unquestionable, but the conduct and aspirations of certain politicians and top level officials is debatable.

    During the unrest created by the PDP and Hurriyat and other politicians in the Kashmir Valley over the making of makeshift Yatri tents in Baltal to provide better facilities to Amarnath pilgrims, the National Flag was torn down and spitted upon.

    “De ragda, de ragda, Hindustan (after vehemently beating their shoes on the flag and ground), jive jive Pakistan,” was followed by a mad frenzy of slogans and hoisting of the Pakistani flag. The CRPF was asked to be a mute spectator to disrespect of such magnitude, and State DG allowed it to flutter at Lal Chowk for hours, atop the very same clock tower!

    Interestingly, it was the son-of-the-soil inclination of the PDP-NC combine that allowed the coronation of Kuldeep Khuda as State Police Chief, though better, more competent officers were available. He also enjoys an enviable proximity to certain Central leaders (the Home Minister attended the marriage of his daughter in Jammu).

    Today there are whispers that he suggested that the act of unfurling the flag was resented by the local population and the CRPF should not unfurl it, though they had been maintaining this tradition for two decades.

  • But today even the BJP is mum at this national sacrilege. Is this silence in acceptance of the separatists’ demands or self-rule and the erosion of Indian sovereignty in Jammu & Kashmir? Recently, BJP think tank Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation invited a supporter of PDP’s demand for self-rule at a function to observe Exodus Day on Jan. 19!

  • The concerns raised by Nancy Ji need serious attention by the powers that be.Just down the memory lane, when this particular clock tower was set up in Lal Chowk some four decades earlier, the ( Indian ) name " BAJAJ ", prominently displayed on two sides of the said tower ( with a running clock on other two sides) was removed within days of its installation by the Islamic fundamentalists. So Lal Chowk was 'Pakistan' then and no wonder it continues to be same now as well and nearly half a million Kashmiri Pandits continue to live a life of refugees in their own country for the last over two decades out of six decades of Indian Republic....Orzuv !   • Since Independence, the Padma awards have been one of the most coveted set of awards of this country, and for not just the award in itself, but for the prestige and honour that it carries. It is meant for the best and is meant to encourage others to strive for excellence.
  • But to believe that some US-based Sant Chatwal would be getting this award even when there are allegations of his being involved in some financial scam and being charge-sheeted for the same by CBI on four accounts (he reportedly has a $9 million default with SBI and some other public sector banks), raises the questions in terms of the veracity of these awards. And now, one is again forced to wonder how could someone like him receive the nation’s most coveted award? Let’s get it straight – Sant Chatwal is no Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, and neither has he conjured up any major contribution to society, barring some failed efforts to promote his son Vikram Chatwal in Bollywood. So, is it for all of these that he is being awarded and put on the same league as the brilliant Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, an Indian American and a Padma awardee who won the most recent Nobel Prize for Chemistry?

  • दीर्घकाल तक इस्लाम की आंधी से हिन्दुस्थान ने टक्कर ली है। इस प्रक्रिया में जहां एक ओर हिंदू समाज को मर्मांतक पीड़ा मिली और उसका सामाजिक एवं आर्थिक जीवन बुरी तरह से अस्त-व्यस्त हो गया वहीं इस्लाम को भी हिंदुत्व के उदात्त विचारों ने अपने रंग में गहरे रंग देने में कोई कसर बाकी नहीं रखी। भक्ति आंदोलन को अगर इस रूप में देखें तो उस कालखण्ड में एक बार ऐसा लगने लगा था कि इस्लाम का असहिष्णु जीवन प्रवाह भक्ति की महान सुरसरिता में समाहित हो जाएगा।
  • भक्ति को कभी कोई भेदभाव स्वीकार नहीं था। इसी के प्रभाव में आकर बहुत से मुसलमान भी हिंदू संतों के शिष्य बन गए और संतों के समान ही जीवन जीने लगे। मध्यकाल में हम देखें तो पाएंगे कि ऐसे हजारों मुस्लिम संत थे जिन्होंने हिंदुत्व के अमर तत्व को अपने इस्लाम मतावलंबियों के बीच बांटना शुरू कर दिया था। यहां हम कबीर, संत रज्जब, संत रोहल साहेब और संत शालबेग के अतिरिक्त ऐसे संतों की चर्चा करेंगे जिन्होंने भारतीय इस्लाम को एक नवीन चेहरा दिया।
  • हिंदू भक्ति आंदोलन ने सामान्य मुस्लिमों से लेकर मुस्लिम सम्राटों तक के परिजनों को हिलाकर रख दिया। रहीम, अमीर खुसरो और दारा शिकोह इसके प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण हैं। और केवल पुरूष ही नहीं मुस्लिम शहजादियां भी भक्ति के रंग में रंग गईं। इसी कड़ी में औरंगजेब की बेटी जैबुन्निसां बेगम तथा भतीजी ताज बेगम का नाम बहुत आदर से लिया जाता है।
  • यही कारण था कि इस्लाम के हिंदुत्व के साथ बढ़ते तादात्मीकरण ने कट्टरपंधी मुल्लाओँ की नींद हराम कर दी। मौलाना हाली ऐसे ही एक कट्टरपंथी मुसलमान थे जिन्होंने हिंदू-मुस्लिम समन्वय के इस महान कार्य पर चिंता जताई। उन्होंने कहा-
    
    वो दीने हिजाजी का बेबाक बेड़ा,
    निशां जिसका अक्साए आलम में पहुंचा,
    मज़ाहम हुआ कोई खतरा न जिसका,
    न अम्मां में ठटका, न कुलज़म में झिझका,
    किए पै सिपर जिसने सातों समंदर,
    वो डुबा दहाने में गंगा के आकर।।
    
    
    यानी मौलाना हाली दुःख प्रकट करते हुए कहते हैं कि इस्लाम का जहाज़ी बेड़ा जो सातों समुद्र बेरोक-टोक पार करता गया और अजेय रहा, वह जब हिंदुस्थान पहुंचा और उसका सामना यहां की संस्कृति से हुआ तो वह गंगा की धारा में सदा के लिए डूब गया।
    
    मुस्लिम समाज़ पर हिंदू तथा मुस्लिम संतों की भगवद्भक्ति का इतना प्रभाव बढ़ता गया कि इस्लामी मौलवी लोगों को लगने लगा कि इस प्रकार तो हिंदुत्व इस्लाम को निगल जाएगा। इस कारण प्रतिक्रिया में आकर भारतीय मुसलमान संतों पर मौलवियों ने कुफ्र अर्थात नास्तिकता के फतवे ज़ारी कर दिये।
  • आज यह पक्के तौर पर कहा जा सकता है कि यदि अंग्रेज़ भारत में न आए होते तो निर्मल भक्ति, प्रेम तथा संतों के पवित्र एवं त्यागमयी आचरण के दैवीय आकर्षण से करोड़ों मुसलमान अपने पुरखों की संस्कृति, धर्म और परंपरा से उसी भांति जुड़ जाते और आनन्द मानते जैसे एक बच्चा अपनी मां की गोदी में सुख का अनुभव करता है।

  • “We condemn the two incidents of churches being attempted to be attacked in Bhatkal taluk, and stringent action should be taken against those who are involved in these incidents. However, it should be noted that no church has been attacked in Bhatkal and only a cross installed in an illegal land was damaged by some miscreants and a glass of a frame of a statue situated out side the church in Taranmakki village in Bhatkal taluk was broken. There was much hue and cry on these petty incidents and media is presenting it as if any church had been attacked or as if any type of vandalism has been made in a church. However, a temple in Bhatkal town was set ablaze and a Jatka idol from a temple in Makhdoom colony was concealed. A back flag was hoisted on a temple. The religious places of Hindus were desecrated, but no action has been taken regarding these incidents, neither any condemnation. The state governor has not mentioned the oppression made on Hindus, during his speech. Despite, the occurrence of many incidents of such types, no condemning statement has appeared and state human right commission has not visited the town. However, when something appear regarding the church, everyone is condemning the incident. Why it is so”, asked Govinda Naik, the north Karnataka convener of Hindu Jagran Vedikke.

  • A wall built twenty years ago by upper caste Hindus allegedly to keep out Dalits, was finally demolished by the authorities in Coimbatore district on Saturday. The 20-feet long wall built across a public road is the second such ‘untouchability wall’ found in the state, the first being the one at Uthapuram village near Madurai.

     

    According to sources, the wall at Singanellur in Coimbatore was constructed by caste Hindus after 58 Dalit families were housed in a new colony named Thanthai Periyar Nagar under a government scheme in 1989. The structure blocked direct access to the main road in an attempt to prevent the Dalit families from traversing through the areas populated by the caste Hindus. A Vinayak temple was also built near it to impart religious sanctity to the structure.

  • In a bizarre incident,a village council in Rohtak city of Haryana has nullified the marriage of a couple, who belonged to the same clan and declared the husband and wife to be brother and sister.

    The incident occurred in Rohtak’s Kheri village where Satish Berwal and Kavita Bainival, married each other three years ago. Today, they have a 10-month-old boy from this marriage.

    The controversy picked up momentum a few days ago, when a group of villagers learnt that both belonged to the same clan. The matter was raised in the village council of Kheri village.

  • Taking the Shiv Sena and the MNS head-on, RSS today said that it has asked its volunteers to protect north Indians in Maharashtra and prevent spread of anti-Hindi feelings.
    
    "The Sangh parivar has asked its volunteers in Maharashtra to try and prevent the spread of anti-north Indian and anti-Hindi feelings," RSS leader Ram Madhav told reporters here.

  • To only blame the Shiv Sena, or its estranged cousin Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, for injecting intolerance into Mumbai is to exonerate another culprit. The State Congress played an equally cynical game by attempting to impose a language test on aspiring taxi drivers. It was apparent to everyone, not least the Congress high command, that this was Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s way of getting a slice of the Marathi manoos constituency.
  • What the Shiv Sena is in effect demanding is an Article 370 for Maharashtra that would confer exceptional rights on ‘State subjects’ and deny these to others who would presumably be categorised ‘guest workers’. Apart from the sheer insanity of distorting the momentum of India’s business capital — whose beneficial fallout also touches the Marathi manoos — the Shiv Sena has now begun to question the primacy of Indian citizenship. In effect, the Sena is demanding a two-tiered sovereignty for Maharashtra, a demand that is qualitatively little different from the demand for ‘dual sovereignty’ in Jammu & Kashmir. Has Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin weighed the implications of what they have undertaken? Do they realise the chaos if every second State presses for exclusionary laws?
    
    It is time the BJP considered the implications of associating with a party that seems hell-bent on fracturing Indian nationhood. The muscle-flexing of the Sena has gone unchallenged and unquestioned for too long. If the BJP doesn’t want to stand up and be counted, it may as well proclaim that all that lofty talk of idealism and ideology is pure humbug.
    
    As for the Shiv Sena, it should realise that Shivaji didn’t proclaim himself the King of the Deccan; he was anointed the Hindu Maharaj; his kingdom was the Hindu pad padshahi. The Sena is ensuring that Shivaji’s grand canopy is shrunk to the size of a handkerchief.

  • Following in the footsteps of its parent organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) completed a three-year orientation course for its cadre last week.

  • Around 50 workers at the district level completed the course at Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini (RMP) at Uttan in Thane.
    “The idea behind the course was to train the active workers in the party’s ideology, practical ways to work as a political party and ways to help the organisation to grow,” Ravindra Sathe, director of RMP said.

    “There were sessions on BJP’s ideology, policies, economic policies, interaction with media and communication skills. Now, we can say that the first batch of BJP’s trained workers has passed out. The party has decided to run the course at the national level too,” Sathe said.

    In RSS, the workers are trained in the organisation’s ideology in a three-year course. The workers have to gather for 21 days per year for the course. This practice is going on since 1940.

  • "In real life, Aamir and Shah Rukh have been proved as '2 Idiots' as both are making stupid statements supporting the cause of Pakistani cricketers," said a statement in the Sena's Hindi mouthpiece Dopahar Ka Saamna.

    Shah Rukh also earned the ire of firebrand Vishwa Hindu Parishad(VHP) leader Praveen Togadia. who asked Hindus to boycott all his movies.

  • महाराष्ट्र में उत्तर भारतीयों के खिलाफ हिंसा के मुद्दे पर शिवसेना और राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ(आरएसएस)आमने-सामने आ गए हैं। आरएसएस ने साफ कर दिया है कि महाराष्ट्र में शिवसेना व एमएनएस की मनमानी नहीं चलने दी जाएगी और संघ के स्वयंसेवक उत्तर भारतीयों के खिलाफ हिंसा का विरोध करेंगे।
    
    उत्तर भारतीयों पर हमले के बावजूद हिंदू एकता की बात करने वाले संघ की चुप्पी को लेकर स्वयंसेवकों में काफी समय से बेचैनी महसूस की जा रही थी। संघ की जड़ें भले ही महाराष्ट्र में हो लेकिन उसकी शाखाओं को बल हिंदी पट्टियों से ही मिलता है।
  • संघ ने अब अपने स्वयंसेवकों को हिंदी भाषियों और उत्तर भारतीयों की रक्षा के लिए आगे आने का निर्देश दिया है।

  • झागरिया के सेंट टेरेसा चर्च परिसर में फांसी लगाने वाला छात्र प्रीस्ट नहीं बनना चाहता था। ये खुलासा उसके रूममेट ने शनिवार को पुलिस को दिए बयान में किया। पुलिस ने शनिवार को दोबारा छात्र के कमरे की तलाशी ली।

    
    
    

    चर्च परिसर में बने टेनिस कोर्ट में एशु बाबू उर्फ वेणुकुमार ने गत दिवस फांसी लगा ली थी। शनिवार को पुलिस दोबारा चर्च में गई। वेणु के रूममेट ने कहा कि वेणु ने बातचीत के दौरान उससे तीन-चार बार जिक्र किया था कि वह प्रीस्ट नहीं बनना चाहता है। पुलिस को वेणु के कमरे से उसके पिता द्वारा चर्च के फादर थॉमस वर्गीस को लिखा पत्र भी मिला। इसमें उनके बेटे को चर्च में एडमिशन देने की सिफारिश की गई है।

    
    
    

    हिंदू संगठनो का आरोप: बजरंग दल और संस्कृति बचाओ मंच के एक दर्जन कार्यकर्ताओं ने आरोप लगाया कि वेणु पर प्रीस्ट बनने का दबाव बनाया जा रहा था। उन्होंने चर्च के फादर के खिलाफ वेणु को आत्महत्या के लिए प्रेरित करने का मामला दर्ज करने की मांग की।

  • नतीजा यह है कि अब इन दो भाइयों की होड़ में एक के बाद एक आज की मुम्बई का प्रत्येक आधुनिक, लोकप्रिय और सही बात करने वाला नायक, ठाकरे बुंधुओं के जैसे निशाने पर हैं।

    उद्धव कुछ स्वभाव और सोच से शालीन रहे तो लोकसभा और विधानसभा चुनावों में उनकी पार्टी निबट गई।
  • इन दिनों असल जहर उगल रहे हैं बाला साहब। कभी सचिन तेंदुलकर उनका निशाना होते हैं तो कभी मुकेश अंबानी। कभी शाहरूख को वह चुनौती भरे अंदाज में सचेत करते हैं और धमकाते हैं तो कभी उनके शालीन, मृदुभाषी पुत्र सैफ अली खान को टपोरी कह सार्वजनिक रूप से हड़काते हैं।
  • पर इस ‘कहीं पर निगाहें, कहीं पर निशाना’ की राजनीति में हमारा समाज एक ऐसे दलदल में फंसता जा रहा है जहां से अगर कभी निकलना नहीं हो पाया तो लेने के देने पड़ सकते हैं।
