Maoist recalls final moments of Laxmanananda, claims cops fled

    • Reconstructing the final moments of the killing of VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati and his four associates in Kandhamal’s Jalespeta ashram in August 2008, Orissa police said that a Maoist who surrendered this week claimed there were four policemen at the ashram but they fled when the Maoists announced that they had come looking for the Swami.
    • The Swami’s murder, according to the Maoist, had been planned days in advance by Sabyasachi Panda, head of Orissa State Committee of the CPI (Maoist).

“Other than the six who took part in the killing, there were several who were entrusted with blocking roads and providing logistics. A few days before the murder, some of the Maoists did a reconnaissance of the area. The cadres also had an ambush plan if they came across police,” Singh said.

    • Brekwada told police there was no transparency in the organization. “We were all brainwashed into believing that life in the jungles would be great. But we found it to be the opposite. Besides, leaders from Andhra Pradesh had the final say on everything though we did all the work,” he said.

'Clinton distancing from Obama' - Rediff.com

  • tags: no_tag

    • Claiming that differences have emerged between United States President Barack Obama [ Images ] and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton [ Images ] on foreign policy issues, an American magazine on Friday suggested that Hillary Clinton's trip to India and Thailand has been her way to distance herself from the White House.

"The trip to India and Thailand, in one sense, is Clinton's way of literally and figuratively distancing herself from Obama, her way of letting us know she has better policies for dealing with Beijing [ Images ]," wrote Forbes columnists Gordon G Chang.

Author of the book The Coming Collapse of China, Gordon said that during her recent visit to India, Clinton devoted most of her time to relationship-building events.

"Clinton's concept of siding with another large democracy seems much more attractive -- and sustainable," he wrote, adding most important, the US and India share values.

    • The Indian Army Saturday celebrated the 268th anniversary of the victory of the Travancore kingdom’s forces over the Dutch in the mid-18th century.

The forces of King Marthanda Varma defeated the Dutch in an amphibious battle July 31, 1741, earning Travancore the distinction of being among the few Asian forces to have defeated a leading European sea power at sea and land.

The king recorded this victory with a majestic pillar erected at Colachal beach, in what is now Tamil Nadu.

    • Will some Bollywood director pay his debt to the salt of the land by making a movie on this battle?

Protest against 'Slumdog' screening in Parliament on August 3 - Hindu Deities | hindujagruti.org

After the Budget, it'll be time for some Bollywood entertainment in Parliament. The Lok Sabha secretariat has arranged for a special screening of Danny Boyle's highly acclaimed film, Slumdog Millionaire, on August 3 for the MPs.

But the icing in the cake will be the presence of its Oscar winners -- music director A R Rahman, lyricist Gulzar and sound engineer Resul Pookutty -- at the special screening.

This will be the first time when Rahman and the two other Oscar winners will be felicitated by Parliament for their achievement. The three had won the much-coveted US Oscar awards on February 23.
    •

    • It was actually Pookutty's idea to bring the Oscar winners to Parliament. When Achary contacted Pookutty, currently stationed in the US, about the secretariat's plan to show the film for the Parliamentarians, Pookutty suggested bringing Rahman there.

    • The Lok Sabha secretariat had shown films for the MPs earlier as well but this will be the first time when a commercial film will be screened because of its worldwide fame. Last year, the secretariat screened Shyam Benegal's Bose: The forgotten Hero for the MPs.

Benegal is currently a nominated MP of the Rajya Sabha.

Earlier, stalwarts like Lata Mangeshkar (then a Rajya Sabha member) had performed at the special programme held on 50 years of Indian independence in 1997. A few years ago, shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan was also felicitated by the Parliament.

India Retold: KARGIL AND POLITCAL DEBATES: NAUSEATING INDEED

  • tags: no_tag

    • That is why General Choudhary was forced to utter the bitter truth that "The soldiers do not think about what the politicians think about their acts. They have been serving their country bravely since 1947". That is possibly why he also called Natarjan's bluff that there were no political reasons for not commemorating Kargil by pointing out that while all heroic acts of the soldiers from 1947 onwards need to be celebrated by the nation, the only day being commemorated is when India's military created Bangladesh.

Something is indeed seriously wrong with India's politicians. And it is getting worse. The amount of energy they spend in trying to run political opponents down and the level that they sink to, to do so, is disgusting and nauseating indeed. They will readily embrace the architect of Kargil, Musharraf, fall into his military commando trap like ignorant fools and nearly get tricked into a shocking deal with him to all but sell Kashmir to Pakistan. But when it comes to political opponents who are Indians, they will behave as if they are dealing with arch enemies who have to be defeated by all means, even if Pakistan benefits in the process.
    • General Shankar Roy Choudhary needs to be complimented for speaking a truth that would have given great comfort to lakhs of serving and retired soldiers who have for long felt that their military leaders have been letting them down since 1947 because of their inability to find their voices when handling politicians and bureaucrats. He has now shown the way with remarkable candour.
    • The Indian Army is no longer a colonial fighting machine. It is now a people's army. It is also apolitical. That, however, does not mean that its leaders, past and present, should keep looking only inward within the organisation.

steps to second partition: India betrays Baloch

    • The biggest victim of terrorism on earth is being accused of fomenting terror. That's no mean achievement of a state power that is busy making friendship with a terror state whose boy is pleading in our court to hang him for killing 166 people last year.
    • And we are bending over backwards to get a certificate of good conduct from it. And expecting it will change for the good.
    • Isn't it a shame that a country doesn't feel hurt at the loss of 1.25 lakh sq km to the enemy, didn't feel angry, didn't resolve to take revenge for the loss of our 600 soldiers in Kargil and teach a lesson to a mischievously unrepentant neighbour? So much so that the discredited Musharraf still gets honourable platforms to big-mouth in Delhi. Who felt hurt that the anniversary of Kargil victory was completely ignored by the government, no one paid tributes to the soldiers, there were no special shows on TV channels? Who felt hurt to read stories of the Kargil heroes who lost their limbs and are forced to live at a paltry pension of Rs 5,000?
    • A self-defeating secularism allows a pro-terrorist Jamia crowd clubbed with the apologists to Azamgarh-Batla house syndrome who collected funds for the accused through a vice-chancellor, speak against the Human Rights Commission's clean chit to the police and restoring the honour of Inspector M C Sharma, who was humiliated by Congress and SP leaders even after his heroic death.
    • The eclipse is secular in its darkness that has affected the Indian soul and we ignore the core issue to run after cosmetics. Just have a relook at Kalam saheb's episode.
    • Americans must be apprised much before to have a proper, honourable safe passage to our ex-head of the state. Was that done?
    • econdly, those who are agitated over the frisking of Kalam are silent on Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra being given the privilege of passing through airport security without a check. Why and on what grounds?

IntelliBriefs: Baluchistan in India Pakistan Joint statement

  • tags: no_tag

    • Is India arming Baloch insurgents?

"The only way that India can arm Baloch insurgents is either through Iran or through Afghanistan. Clearly, India cannot support Baloch insurgents through Iran without the explicit permission of the supreme leader Sayyid Ali Khamenei. Again, Indian cannot arm Baloch insurgents through Afghanistan without the explicit permission of Lt General David Barno. Additionally, an instable Balochistan jeopardises India's pipeline dreams and is not in India's long-term economic interests."

"There is little doubt that arms are flowing into Pakistan's Balochistan both through Iran and Afghanistan. That, however, in no way means that the states of Iran or Afghanistan are directly involved. Surely, the entire region has long been flooded with Kalashnikovs, heavy machine guns, rocket propelled grenades, landmines and mortars. Every kind of killing machine is available to anyone who is willing to pay the price, and then Pakistan's border with Afghanistan is a rugged 2,430 kilometres long, the one with Iran is 909 kilometres (even America has failed to block the supply of arms to Iraqi 'insurgents')."

    • And it’s not like India is at the end of a list of names of potential enemies there, it’s the very first one! Only after that does he mention countries like Russia, Iran and North Korea.

I agree because homosexuality is in the mind and then seeps into the genes.

    • Even animals in the zoo turn homosexuals when they are deprived of the opposite sex.  The homosexuality malaise goes deeper.  It is a disease of the split mind.
