  • tags: no_tag

Jinnah is not relevant

    • Who was responsible for the creation of Pakistan? Could partition have been avoided? Was it merely the result of Britain’s attempt to divide India before leaving so that it could have elbow room in the sub-continent by playing India and Pakistan against each other?
    • In fact, neither the Congress nor Jinnah was responsible for partition. Nehru and others did fail to understand the challenge of Muslim separatism. The British, of course, played a mischievous role and the Communists provided the Muslim League with all the intellectual arguments it needed to press for partition.
    • The seeds of vivisection of India were sown long before the arrival of either Jinnah or Nehru on the Indian political scene. The real culprit was the Muslim psyche, which lived in the ‘glorious’ past when the Islamic sword ruled India. The prospect of living as equals with kafirs in independent India was unacceptable to Muslims. Jinnah, a leader without any mass following till the 1930s, was an instant hit with Muslims after he started articulating their separatist demands.
    • Speaking in Meerut on March 16, 1888, over a year before Jawaharlal Nehru was born, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, founder of Aligarh Muslim University, had espoused the two-nation theory. He had asked, “Is it possible that two nations — the Mohammedans and the Hindus — could sit on the same throne and remain equal in power? Most certainly not. It is necessary that one of the two should conquer the other.”
    • Two months later, in December 1906, the Muslim League was formed in Dhaka. And in 1908, after his return from England, Muhammad Iqbal wrote a poem Tarane-i-Milli, the first line of which reads: Chino-Arab hamara, Hindustan ho hamara, Muslim hain hum, Watan hai Saara Jahan hamara (China and Arabia are ours, Hindustan is ours; we are Muslims and the whole world is ours).
    • During this period, the bulk of the Hindus opted for the Congress. Muslims, in turn, opted for Jinnah, and not even five per cent of the people remained with Mahatma Gandhi. The fact that the Muslim masses did not follow Maulana Azad, a deeply religious Muslim, and supported Jinnah, who was not a practising Muslim, is itself instructive of the influence of Sir Syed’s two-nation theory.
    • The debate about Jinnah’s legacy is irrelevant for India. Instead of debating Jinnah’s ‘secular credentials’, we must seek to properly evaluate the threat to our secular democracy from the resurgent Islamic orthodoxy in Jinnah’s Pakistan, of which Al Qaeda, the LeT, etc, are only symptoms.

Desicritics.org: Shahrukh Khan's Detention Drama: Spare Some Thought For non-Muslim Victims

    • Outraged, Shah Rukh Khan, in his initial statement, said he was detained for his Muslim name and that the detention was for two hours, which later came down to 1.5 hours and, as of latest, ‘just over an hour’, according to Times of India.
    • What struck me most is that, while I was sitting there, I saw quite a few people of non-Muslim backgrounds—indeed, a greater number than Muslims—are being put through the same procedure.
    • Undoubtedly, the whole new situation is created by the 9/11 attacks, and the Islamic extremists’ continued efforts to strike at U.S. interests and institutions, both inside and outside the country. And alongside Muslims, non-Muslims are also made to suffer the consequence for Muslims’ actions.
    • The other day, my sister-in-law called in from London; while conversing, she informed me that she—who follow some form of Buddhism and strictly vegetarian—is preparing for a cultural compatibility test in order to apply for permanent residency. She told me that she is made to study British history, which most Britons don’t know. The same procedure applies to other Western countries, such as Netherlands, Australia etc. One knows well that these tests have been introduced, exclusively because of Muslim immigrants’ refusal to accept—and assimilate in—Western culture and values.
    • It seems that most kaffirs like me have generally accepted them, because they go through the save regulations on a daily basis, but never make much noise about it. So far, all the noise about these new regulations, put in place in the post-9/11 era, have been made by Muslims, despite the fact that, it is they, who force the new regulations to be put in place. We the kaffirs suffer for their sins, and accept it humbly. For Khan, if he really cared, he should—instead of crying foul of suffering discrimination himself—spare some thought for us, the infidels, who are suffering the same for his beloved faith and the actions of his coreligionists.

'Almost every Muslim was with Gandhi, not Jinnah': Rediff.com news

    • In 1915, Gokhale advised Gandhi to keep 'his ears open and his mouth shut' for a year, and see India. Gandhi stopped in Calcutta on his way to Rangoon and spoke to students. Politics, he said, should never be divorced from religion. The signal was picked by Muslims planning to marry politics with religion in their first great campaign against the British empire, the Khilafat movement.
    • Over the next three years Gandhi prepared the ground for his version of the freedom struggle: a shift from the legislatures to the street; a deliberate use of religious imagery to reach the illiterate masses through symbols most familiar to them (Ram Rajya for the Hindus, Khilafat for the Muslims); and an unwavering commitment to the poor peasantry, for whom Champaran became a miracle.
    • History might be better understood if we did not treat it as a heroes-and-villains movie. Life is more complex than that. The heroes of our national struggle changed sometimes with circumstances. The reasons for the three instances I cite are very different; their implications radically at variance. I am not making any comparisons, but only noting that leaders change their tactics.

Non-violent Gandhi, who broke the empire three decades later, received the Kaiser-I-Hind medal on June 3, 1915 (Tagore was knighted the same day) for recruiting soldiers for the war effort.

Subhas Chandra Bose, ardently Gandhian in 1920, put on a uniform and led the Indian National Army with support from the Fascists.

Jinnah, the ambassador of unity, became a partitionist.

The question that should intrigue us is why.

Ambition and frustration are two reasons commonly suggested in India, but they are not enough to create a new nation.

Jinnah made the demand for Pakistan only in 1940, after repeated attempts to obtain constitutional safeguards for Muslims and attempts at power-sharing had failed.

‘Muslims Chennai’s early settlers’

  • tags: no_tag

    • Muslims were one of the earliest inhabitants of Chennai and they made it their home as early as the 13th century AD.

Making a presentation on Muslims and mosques of Madras, as part of the Madras Week celebrations organised by Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali at Amir Mahal, documentary film maker S Anvar said the Venetian merchant traveller Marco Polo had recorded in his travelogue that 13th century Mylapore had a lot of Muslims and they considered St Thomas, an apostle of Christ as a saint.

Duarte Barbosa, a Portugese Chronicler said during early 16th century that Muslims were looking after the tomb of St Thomas in Mylapore now Santhome. There is also a view that the city itself got its name Madras from ‘Madrasa patnam.’ Saidapet, a prominent neighbourhood of Chennai’s original name was Saidabad. Arcot Nawab Saadathulla Khan built a mosque here in the early 18th century and named the locality as Saidabad.

  • tags: no_tag
