Blood on our hands, but this too shall pass

Blood on our hands, but this too shall pass

M K Bhadrakumar

Prabhakaran's blood. No, it is not only Prabhakaran's, but also of 70,000 Sri Lankan Tamils who have perished in the unspeakable violence through the past quarter century.

The Sinhalese will never allow the world to dictate to them a political solution. More so, they will promptly and conclusively rebuff any attempt by us to seek a role in what they will now onward insist as strictly their internal affair.

Always remember that Sri Lanka is the last bastion of Theravada Buddhism and preserving that legacy is the Sinhalese people's precious tryst with destiny. At least, that is how they feel. We have to accept the weight of their cultural nationalism.

They see Sri Lanka as the land of the Sinhalese. How would they allow us Indians who wiped out Buddhism with such ferocity from the subcontinent interfere with their keen sense of destiny as the custodians of that very same great religion? Never, never.

If we try to pressure the Sinhalese, they will approach the Chinese or the Pakistanis to balance our pressure. They are capable of doing that.

The Sinhalese are a gifted people. We all know few can never match their terrific skills in media management. They have always lived by their wits.

Equally, they are fantastic practitioners of diplomacy. We suspect that they may in fact have an edge over us on this front, for unlike us who are dissimulating from day to day as if we're a responsible regional power and dissipating our energies in pastimes such as hunting down Somalian pirates in distant seas, they are a highly focused lot.

They have the grit because they are fighting for the preservation of their country's future identity as a Buddhist nation.

See, they have already solved the Tamil problem in the eastern provinces of Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara. The Tamils are no more the majority community in those provinces.

Similarly, from tomorrow, they will commence a concerted, steady colonisation programme of the northern provinces where Prabhakaran reigned supreme for two decades. They will ensure incrementally that the northern regions no more remain as Tamil provinces.

The Tamils will be made into a minority community in their own northern homelands. They will have to live among the newly created Sinhalese settlements in those regions to the north of Elephant Pass.

The Sinhalese are good friends of India. Our elite and their elite speak the same idiom. We both speak good English, play golf and like chilled beer. We should, therefore, wish them well.

As for the blood on our hands, true, it is a nuisance. But this is not the first time in our history that we're having blood on our hands.

Trust our words. No lasting harm will be done. Blood doesn't leave stains.

Abandoning Kurukshetra before the war is won

The BJP’s loss in 2004 cast a pall of gloom over Hindu nationalists; for some of us even in 2004, the gloom came with intense anger. Five years later, the BJP’s loss in 2009 has caused more anger than gloom because five years is a long time

Just so did Murli Manohar Joshi react on television two days ago when asked why he thought the BJP failed so miserably at the hustings. Joshi, who prides himself on his scholarship, was so eager to throw his hat into the ring and succeed to the throne as secular leader of a secular party, that he failed to recall history to mind when he declared solemnly that the BJP leadership alone was to blame and the BJP lost because it had not fielded Muslims in significant numbers!

And just so did Arun Jaitley forget his party’s history. The Times of India carried in February 2009, ahead of the elections, answers from different political parties to the question, “Who does your party represent”? Like Gandhi before him, who said the Congress was not a Hindu party and did not represent Hindu interests, Jaitley, deliberately choosing to forget the historical context in which the RSS and the Jana Sangh came into being answered, “BJP represents the common man, the underprivileged, the Dalit, minorities, agriculturists as well as industrialists. Despite the Congress’ efforts to brand BJP as a Hindu party and malign us as communal, more and more Muslims are coming to the party fold. Isn’t it enough indication to prove that ours is truly a secular party”? The BJP had metamorphosed into a grotesque imitation of Gandhi’s Congress.

The Congress party, controlled by the iron fist of Sonia Gandhi was not described as a creature of colonial intent for nothing. The Sachar Committee, like the Minto-Morley ‘reforms’ aimed at empowering the Muslims on all fronts. Aurobindo then called it “encouraging Mahomeddan rowdyism”. This was communal politics of the most brazen kind; to make sure that the Hindus got the message loud and clear, Manmohan Singh pronounced that Muslims had the first right to all resources in the country.

All political parties, the BJP included, have courted the Abrahamic minorities because irrespective of their actual numbers or population percentage, they constitute a decisive vote-bank.

This minority vote-bank could have been rendered ineffective only by Hinduising the election agenda. Speaking for the Abrahamic minorities was ‘secular’ while speaking for Hindus was ‘communal’.

Farooq Abdullah, the arch communalist, in whose body there is not a drop of secular blood, former Chief Minister of a state whose state constitution refuses to accept secularism even in principle, a state which with its peculiar and Islamised electoral arrangement will not allow Hindus or Buddhists to become Chief Minister, hailing from a state whose jihadis genocided and threw out all Hindus from the Kashmir Valley, without batting an eyelid, when asked to comment on the election results, declared deadpan – the people of India have voted for secularism. This Sunni Muslim in whose state a Hindu cannot become a Chief Minister openly expresses his fierce ambition to be the President of this Hindu-majority nation.

The country’s political discourse defines secularism in practice as being uncompromisingly anti-Hindu, which makes Hindu interests and Abrahamic minority interests a zero sum game. It was so under Nehruvian secularism and it continues to remain so in Nehru-Gandhian colonial rule.

The BJP’s fall was imminent because it entered the political arena without a commitment to Hindu rajya to protect the Hindu rashtra. It captured power with the Hindu vote and then kicked the Hindus in their teeth. The BJP kicked the ladder that lifted it up. It was expected of the BJP to –

  • Reclaim PoK
  • Annex Bangladesh
  • End separatism in J&K by de-legitimising the state constitution; Article 370 would have disappeared automatically
  • Check the influx of Bangladeshi Muslims
  • Stop all foreign funds for NGOs
  • Halt the uncontrolled mushrooming of churches, prayer houses and madarasas
  • Ban religious conversion altogether
  • Bring in a central legislation to free all Hindu temples from government control
  • Ban cow slaughter and protect cattle wealth
The BJP was expected to do all this step by measured step in the seven years that it remained in Delhi. But coalition politics de-Hinduised the BJP beyond recognition. The BJP did nothing for the Hindus who catapulted it to power when it ruled the country; in the opposition for four years between 2004 and 2009, it did even less.

To make sure the BJP was not given the time to go back to its Hindu agenda, the UPA and the hands that pull the UPA strings, threw one red herring after another under the BJP nose. First they ran mindlessly behind the Volcker Report, then they ran behind the Mitrokhin Report, and then they ran behind the invisible Ram Setu.

The BJP was like several animal rights activists I know; they will not lift a finger to put a little crow back in its nest, nor feed the street dog or the cow at the gate; but they will form a human chain to stop killing of the distant whale or the seals in the Antarctic.

Now, as always, Hindus of this nation had been betrayed and let down only by their leaders. A large measure of the blame for the BJP’s fall has to be laid at the RSS door.

Why should India grant permission to the American delegation of ‘International Commission for Religious Freedom (ICRF)’ working for welfare of Christians since many countries have denied permission to them?

Cuba denied VISA to this USA delegation, China did not issue VISA to them for 3 years and later, granted permission in the year 2005 after stipulating a number of conditions. Vietnam does not find any need for the delegation to visit that country. If the working of this commission is studied, it can be observed that such visit will be interference in the internal matters of this country.

Syed Ahmed Bukhari’s call for a separate political party for Muslims is an implicit confirmation of the thesis propounded by Jinnah that Muslims cannot co-exist with others, notably Hindus.

Recently, Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari, said that the time had come to float a new political party led and commanded by Muslims to address their problems. The call was for a party of the Muslims, by the Muslims, for the Muslims.

All Hindus should protest against NY Times for justifying M F Hussain's Hindu Deities' nude paintings.

On Sunday May 3rd in the New York Times Review, Mr Naresh Fernandes, editor of Time out Mumbai, implied that it is perfectly OK for anyone to 'paint Hindu deities in the nude'. This was in reference to MF Hussain.

My favorite example is that of Karnataka - the BJP had nothing there a few years ago. However, they have used temples and other faith-based organisations to their advantage. They have networked and used these as delivery vehicles. Now - even with as unflamboyant a leader as Yedyurappa - they have their nose in front of the Congress and the Gowdas. It is because they actually developed an organization - and waited for the others to dig themselves into a hole!

Our children face a frightening future not because of the Taliban (they are just a handful) but because of the ultra-conservative wave of religion that has swept this country. Remote madrassas may be turning boys into drones but then there are thousands of madrassas spread all over Pakistan’s urban centres that are producing millions of neo-drones who may not become suicide bombers but are totally unfit to live in this world. These kids need to be rescued.

Alfred Hitchcock, the great movie director who specialised in frightening people, was once driving in Switzerland when he suddenly pointed out of the car window and said, “That is the most frightening sight I have ever seen.” It was a priest in conversation with a little boy, his hand on the boy’s shoulder.

Hitchcock leaned out of the car window and shouted, “Run, little boy! Run for your life!”

Sri Lanka post-LTTE

Sri Lanka post-LTTE

Dr. Subramanian Swamy

The outcome of the recent elections in Tamil Nadu has been the defeat of the most faithful of the LTTE touts in India. These financial orphans of the LTTE have been thoroughly exposed because Tamilians do not care for the LTTE, contrary to media projections. The common joke today is that 'Puligal' (Tigers) have been reduced to 'Eligal' (Rats) because they (the LTTE) have had to hide in holes in the ground to try save themselves.

The LTTE, thus, was portrayed in the anti-India media as having "defeated" the world's third largest army, and thus acquired a larger than life image. It used its hero status with a vocal minority in Tamil Nadu who were the LTTE's large financial beneficiaries to build a network of supply chains within the Tamil Nadu state. They had access to hospitals for their injured cadre, supply of diesel, kerosene, and medicines for the Jaffna supporters, small arms manufacture units in Coimbatore, uniform stitching factory in Erode, and a modern wireless communication centre in Trichy. The second rank leaders of the LTTE traveled freely within the state in cars using the ruling DMK party flags to evade the police.

But Prabhakaran needed to obtain two things, to carry out his assassination plan successfully. First was to ensure that RG came to Tamil Nadu to be accessible to the LTTE assassins, and second, some people (as allies) highly placed in India, and so powerful that the blame for the assassination would not be pinned on the LTTE.

The LTTE from day one has been part of the problem of the Tamil-Sinhala conflict, and not a part of the solution. Part of the problem is the inability of the Sinhala majority to share power with the Tamil minority. Such a sharing can be best done in a Constitution with sufficient devolution --by replacing the present unitary Sri Lankan one with a quasi-federal Indian type or fully federal US type.

Tamils and Sinhalas are one people. They have the same DNA structure. There is thus no ethnic difference between them. They all had originated in the Indian mainland and today speak sister languages, Sinhala and Tamil, with a large vocabulary in common with Sanskrit and Pali, both Indian languages. Their scripts have both evolved from the Brahmi script. Thus, there is no fundamental linguistic difference either. Their religions, Hinduism and Buddhism believe in the same distinguishing and fundamental theology of darshan, re-incarnation and karma. In fact, Buddhism began as a reform movement of Hinduism and these reforms have been absorbed by Hinduism. Hence, there is also fundamentally no religious difference between a Sinhala Buddhist and Tamil Hindu.

The two communities grew apart during the colonial period because the Tamils had access to the British imperialist invaders, due to their earlier contacts with them on the Indian mainland. This gave the Tamils professional and educational advantages. The Sinhala majority upon getting independence used their brute majority to try and close the gap by undemocratic equalisation procedures and denying power to the Tamils by adopting a unitary constitution that had no safeguards for the Tamil minority. This of course backfired, in fact has landed Sri Lanka in to spiraling crisis.

No Need To Panic Over BJP Not Winning the Election 09

No Need To Panic Over BJP Not Winning the Election 09

Prof. Desikachary Vembar , Canada

In the euphora of the Congress victory, people in general and the so called Pundits miss to see some of the positive outcome that is supportive of BJP. For instance, Mamta Bannerjee’s Trinamool Congress has routed the Communist party in Bengal , which is a vehement critic of the BJP as well as the progressive Indo-US nuclear deal. Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), which is harsh critic of the Nehru-Indira dynasty, has toppled the Congress there. The communists in Kerala have been routed by the Congress party itself, which supports BJP’s anti communist platform. A negative outcome for the BJP as well as the country as a whole is the unfortunate victory of Karunanidhi’s DMK which has proved itself as a separatist outfit as well as anti-Hindu.

The so called pundits of election results fail to see the positive gains that BJP has made indirectly.

It is therefore necessary to look beyond the ballot box for achieving the long term goals of BJP mentioned above. It is necessary to point out that there is ‘De Facto’ Hindutva in India , though not ‘De Jure’, a fact that many fail to note and appreciate.

India ’s national unity and integrity remains strong as ever due to the ‘De Facto’ Hindutva that binds the entire country. This is in great contrast to Pakistan which sixty years of its partition from India has become both a failed and a rogue state that will dissolve itself sooner or later.

Another key factor to remember is that the electoral victory

Of the Congress party may not be dangerous for the BJP so long as it is not influenced by and keeps itself away from the Nehru-Indira dynastic rule. It is heartening to see other scions of the same Nehru-Indira dynasty, like Maneka and Varun Gandhi who are leading lights of the BJP and its Hindutva goals. Congress will cease to be a threat to BJP after it has cleansed itself of the anti majority and pro minority ‘vote bank’ politics. The fact that the Congress recognises the unsuitability of Sonia Gandhi for Prime Ministership due to her foreign nationality by birth and her Roman Catholic allegience to the Vatican is a gain for the BJP. Even Rahul, who is projected to become Prime Minister sooner or later shows signs of distancing himself from the views of his foreign born mother on key issues of national integrity and security as revealed by some of his recent utterances that reflects the BJP stand. For example, Rahul has reportedly said that Afzal Guru, the master mind behind the attack on Indian parliament ‘will be executed when his turn comes’ is a comment that reflects the BJP stand. He also had some words of praise for Advani to the chagrin of his scheming mother. It should also be remembered that most of the Congressmen themselves are private sympathisers of BJP though they want to remain ‘politically correct’ to save their seats in Parliament and Assemblies. Another key factor that misses public attention is the fact that the ‘arithmetic’ of low minority representation in the Legislatures (less than 5%) has not changed a bit which shows that the vote bank politics of Congress and other parties is nothing more than a gimmick to fool the minorities for their votes. So, a deeper analysis of the election results shows that nothing is lost by BJP losing the election 09, since there are many other ‘routes’, besides the ballot box, by which its national goals could be achieved.

Bangladeshi votes decisive in Bengal: emerging Red-green divide?

Red-Green divide in Bengal

Emerging Red-Green divide in Bengal

(Graphic: courtesy Times of India)

There have been innumerable discussions, Governors’ reports, press releases on the role of illegal Bangladeshis during elections in the border areas of Bengal and Assam, “conspiracy theories” that the Bangladesh border is pushing west or on the creation of “Greater Bangla”. It just doesn’t get any clearer than this - the entire Muslim “bangla” has shifted its weight from the Red brigade to the Green brigade, i.e. from CPI(M) to Congress/Trinamool. And, the result is here for all of us to see. In the light of the observation that BJP votes made significant differences in at least 6 lok sabha seats, a big question arises as to how BJP or pro-Hindu forces should align. Frankly, the choice is between the devil and the deep sea and there is no good answer. There cannot be a good answer because when it comes to appeasing the Bangladeshis, both CPM and TMC are trying to the hilt. But, what’s pertinent is that BJP drives home the message that neither CPI(M) nor Congress/TMC, propped by illegal Bangladeshi votes, can save Bengal. BJP needs to seize this space now more than ever.

Verdict 2009: Happy and Unhappy
Undercurrents.ca

The re-election of congress government would mean a renewal of attacks on Hindu religious practices & institutions by a combination of forces. This would also mean opening the doors fully for evangelists to operate with government patron.

The Indian voter has seen the election purely from an Indian stability point of view, which is quite mature. The Indian voter either due to or in spite of his illiteracy and poverty has done which no voter in any other part of the world would do. The Indian voter has “voted” for an outsider to rule them. That is a characteristic so peculiar to the Indian sub-continent. They seem to have an affinity to things foreign. The Indian cricket team has a foreign coach; the Indian congress has a foreigner as its chief.

If the congress government can demonstrate that it can be a truly secular party, then we would support it totally. But they have a strong Christian agenda which is threatening to a Hindu. They would do anti-Hindu things in India what right wing Christians can only dream to do in the west.

For centuries Hindus were ruled by sword and deceit. They had a brief respite from foreign rule when the great Mahatma under exceptional circumstances produced exceptional leadership qualities and won freedom from the British. Now the same Hindus are giving away their freedom by democratic means.

We congratulate the majority Hindu population of India who were more open hearted then their western counterparts and welcomed Ms.Sonia, an Italian, as their party chief. It now remains to be seen how she reciprocates.

Koenraad Elst on the BJP’s Debacle

Koenraad Elst on the BJP’s Debacle

In his masterpiece, Decolonizing the Hindu Mind, Koenraad Elst makes a very perceptive observation about the BJP. He concludes that the BJP–ever since its inception–has always played the game by the rules set by its opponents. In his brief but lucid piece analyzing the BJP’s 2009 poll disaster, he underscores the same point and expands it to suit the present context. Here it is, in full.

BJP apes Congress, fails

Koenraad Elst

Right-wing parties all over the world have a common trait: Once in or near power, they betray their own support base. The BJP is no different. It is needlessly described as a ‘Hindu chauvinist’ party which it is not. To prove its ‘secular’ credentials, the BJP chose to become the ‘B’ team of the Congress. And was rejected by the voters

Church claims credit for Congress crown

Church claims credit for Congress crown

For anyone who feels that the church in India does not have any poilitcal ambitions, here is a shocker. But for many of us, its not a surprise at all, just that they have admitted to it in public. The church is claiming credit for the UDF win in Kerala. With this I think their next target would be India as a whole. The Hindu temples are being taken over by the government and the government inturn is taken over by the Church. Wow thats a nice way to take control of a country.

What i dont understand is that when Hindu religious sadhus/priests ask for people to support a party that party is termed as “communal”, whille the church and the mullahs asks for people to support someone the party automatically becomes “secular”.

“This is an answer to those who said the faithful would not follow the advice of priests and bishops in political affairs. The Church has worked that hard against the LDF government,” said Dr Stephen Alathara, spokesmen of KCBC, the apex body of Catholic bishops in Kerala.

A pastoral letter by the KCBC, read out amid Sunday Mass in Kerala’s churches a fortnight ahead of the polls, exhorted the flock to steer clear of the CPI(M) and the BJP, a negligible presence in the bipolar state. “Constitutional crises are frequent nowadays. The violations of minority rights in education sector should be assessed in this context.”
