Anjumans deprive Muslim women of microcredit- Swaminathan S A Aiyar-Columnists-Opinion-The Economic Times

    • The government seeks inclusive growth and access to credit. The Sachar Committee is dismayed by the relatively low access of Muslims to bank credit. Yet, neither the government, Sachar Committee members nor intellectuals are raising an outcry against a massive drive to deny millions of Muslim women access to microcredit.

This is driven not by Hindu extremists but by Muslim anjumans (community organisations ) in Karnataka. Thus, a community complaining of credit deprivation is itself destroying credit to millions of Muslims — because the anjumans are male bastions and the poor borrowers are women.
    • Ramesh Bellamkonda heads BSS Microfinance, the worst hit of several microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Karnataka. He says BSS has provided microcredit for two years in Kolar, three-and-a-half in Mysore, and eight in Ramanagaram, enjoying excellent relations with its Muslim borrowers and virtually 100% repayment.

Today, repayment is down to almost zero, because of non-repayment directives by the anjumans and their goons, who threaten and even assault BSS staff. Muslims constitute a substantial proportion of borrowers, so the anjuman directives can bankrupt entire MFIs, affecting other community borrowers too.

  • tags: no_tag

    • The Burqa issue of Bhatkal's Government First Grade College has once again come to light in the media as e some of the non-Muslim students came to the college wearing saffron dress to express their oppositions and to protest against the decision of the CDC (College Development Committee) committee to allow wearing of Burqa in the college premises. On Friday, 20 to 25 male students came to college supported by some of the girls students. Talking to the press reporters, as student of the college, Ms. Pallavi Naik said that they are not against Burqa, however, uniform should be compulsory for all the students and all other girl students were of the same view, she added.
    • Bhatkal:
    • On this, occasion, the students who appeared in the college in saffron dress said that they would continue to attend their classes in saffron dress until the girl students stop wearing other dress ( i.e. Burqa) in the class. According to the students of the college, they had signed an undertaking, in which it is included that they would attend their classes in uniform. Now, the disciplineof the college has affected, with the wearing of Burqa by some of the college girl students of the college, they alleged.
    • It may be noted that there are total 580 students in the college, of which 10 are e Muslim male students and another 10 students are Muslim girl students. In this college BA, BBA, and B.com classes are being run. This is the third year since the college was started.

Tarun Vijay: Why should our President receive the queen’s baton?

  • tags: no_tag

    • Tarun Vijay
    • the President is all ready to get the dubious distinction of the first-ever head of state of a Commonwealth country to receive the baton from the Queen Elizabeth. It’s a ‘baton’ that’s customarily given to the host country of the Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth has 53 member states including Nauru, .. etc and none of them ever thought it prudent to be so obsessed with the colonial hangover that their head of the state would go and be a durbari in the former coloniser’s palace.
    • We are a nation that produced a large number of rai bahadurs and sirs and rao sahebs while ‘crazy deewane’ were becoming Bhagat Singhs and Rajgurus and Sukhdevs. There were a large section of our Indians who thought it prudent to keep a silence on Jalianwala Bagh, honour the butcher Dyer even after the gruesome incident. It’s another matter that we had those Casablancas too who preferred gallows to knighthood.
    • Shouldn’t they be raising questions that why the lady occupying Buckingham Palace must remain the head of the Commonwealth? The most logical and contextually correct thing would be to have a head of a democratic sovereign as its chief and not a titular icon of a royalty that stinks with the blood of our revolutionaries and whose wealth is built on the loot of India?
    • Pratibha Patil hasn’t found time to visit Hussainiwala , the memorial to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. Or the Jalianwala Bagh. London seems to be more inviting to her. What a shame that India should send a large contingent of sportsmen along with her.
    • The Baton was fashioned from sterling silver and was engraved with traditional symbols of the creative artists' families and cultures, including a wolf, a raven and an eagle with a frog in its mouth.

The Pioneer > Amma Tujhe Salaam!

    • Chandan Mitra
    • The Jamiat’s purpose in reviving the issue is all the more diabolical considering none can be physically forced to sing Vande Mataram, Jana Gana Mana, or Star Spangled Banner or God Save the Queen for that matter. Even if somebody has a serious objection to singing any anthem, why broadcast that from rooftops? By doing this, Maulana Madni has only succeeded in reinforcing the extremist Hindu view that a section of the Muslim community is intrinsically disloyal to India, that they hoist Pakistani flags during cricket matches and, therefore, the jarring slogan “Hindustan mein rehna hoga, toh Vande Mataram kehna hoga” is fully justified.
    • I find such stereotyping repugnant and objectionable, but shouldn’t Muslim theologians and political leaders ask themselves if men like Maulana Mandi are rehnuma (protector) or dushman (enemy) of the community? I believe the timing of the controversy’s revival was deliberate. Over the last few years, Hindu-Muslim relations have been improving across the board, minor clashes in small towns notwithstanding. Clearly, this is not to the liking of some powerbrokers in the Muslim community.
