The Pioneer :: Home : >> Trapped in hatred

Pakistan is caught in a vortex of jihadi violence for which it has only itself to blame. A country founded on the ideology of hate couldn’t have fared any better.

The recent spate of violent incidents in Pakistan has left the uninitiated, particularly the peaceniks, shocked, startled and dazed. The internecine war between various jihadi groups in the name of Islam continues unabated. Fundamentalists are also targetting what remains of religious minority communities, particularly Hindus, in Pakistan. In the process, the country is falling apart and is being increasingly seen as a failed state by the rest of the world. The seeds of the spiralling violence were sown in the very ideology which led to Pakistan's creation. The demand for an independent Islamic state in the Indian sub-continent was fuelled by two factors - pride in their past among Muslims and their fear of the future in a Hindu-dominated India. The Muslim elite of pre-partition India that provided leadership to the Muslim masses was caught in a time warp and dreamed of reliving the Mughal glory. After the departure of the British, the prospects of competing with the Hindus (whom they had ruled) in a democratic set-up as equals frightened them. British imperialists and Indian Communists helped the Muslims to divide India

Karnataka Govt's shameless admission : SC hasn't issued directions to demolish temples - Karnataka Temple demolition | hindujagruti.org: "

Bengaluru (Karnataka): In a program held at Udupi, Dr. V. S. Acharya, the Minister for ‘Mujrai’ unabashedly admitted that there was no such order issued by the Supreme Court for demolishing temples. Dr. Acharya said further, “The Court had asked to check the plan and authority-letter of temples. The Government had instructed Administration to shift the temples, in a peaceful manner, that were creating obstacles in traffic only after discussing the matter with respective temple committees. It was also instructed that where temples are made just by smearing ‘kumkum’ on some stone which had no traditional value, should also be shifted after discussing with those people who have constructed such temples; but the officers misconstrued the instructions and without issuing ‘show cause’ notice, issued notice to demolish temples creating chaos.” In the beginning of this program, Shri. Vishweshteertha, the ‘Pejavar Muthadhish’ said, “The Government should, rather than demolishing temples, amend the Act so that nobody’s sentiments are hurt.”

......Then the Govt. should re-construct the demolished temples as atonement ! – Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS)

5000 temples were branded as ‘unauthorized’ by interpreting the Supreme Court order in a wrong manner. Later, the Government took sudden initiative in demolishing even those temples about which there was no controversy. HJS tried to stage agitations all over the State to warn the Government. Despite this, the Government committed the sin of demolishing more than 250 temples. The idols from these temples were broken and thrown on the roads. The Government kept mum, like ‘Dhrutarashtra-Gandhari’, although it realized that it was a wrong action. Now awareness has been created among Hindus due to HJS agitation and the Government is trying to cover up the matter by admitting that there was no order by the Supreme Court. HJS condemns this action and demands that the Government should re-construct the demolished temples by recovering money from the concerned officers. – Mr. Mohan Gauda, spokesperson, HJS, Karnataka

The Enemy Within
Dr. Vijaya Rajiva

In a remarkable event at the India Today Conclave Dr. Subramania Swamy spoke honestly and forthrightly on the question of how there cannot be social harmony in the Indian subcontinent until the two proselytizing religions Christianity and Islam accept that India is a Hindu majority country with a long history of religious tolerance that was shattered with the coming of the Islamic and Christian (British) regimes. It ended with the Partition of Akhanda Bharat and the successive ethnic cleansing of Hindus from Bangladesh, Pakistan and within Indian itself, in the state of Kashmir.Nearly 500,000 Kashmiri Hindus were driven out of Kashmir merely because they were Hindus. The Hindu population of Bangladhesh which had been 35% is now v7 %. Likewise in Pakistan.

As Shri R.Venkatanarayanan, former Secretary to the Government of India, later former
National Secretary of the HDAS (Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha) and currently Advisor to Swami Dayananda Sarasvati, put it :

“ As far as I can recall, this is the first time in India that an eminent person has spoken so openly from a non- religious platform that social harmony in India, a religiously pluralistic society, is dependent on how Christianity and Islam conduct themselves in regard to Hinduism. Unless what Sri Swamy has brought out is assiduously buried deep by vested interests (the media will do its best to do so) the consequence in civil debate in India is likely to benefit social harmony. Hindus are the best neighbours in the world, provided their toes are not trampled upon. “ ( in an e-mail to Breakingindia.group)

The Fakir's Mask: Public Apparitions of Sai Baba in and around Mumbai

Abstract: This talk about the modern Indian charismatic Sai Baba of Shirdi (1830s–1918) takes up the question of the apparent ubiquity of his likeness in contemporary Mumbai, where it circulates as the emblem of a universalistic religious attitude (with a specific emphasis on Hindu-Muslim comity). The argument builds on ethnographic research on the public streets, where a diverse constituency—-to be identified with shantytown residents who retain ties with their villages—-erects shrines housing images of Hindu deities and other protector figures. Foremost among these figures is Sai Baba. The inquiry encountered a dramatic turn when municipal officials, acting in the name of the public interest, initiated citywide demolitions of "illegal religious structures." The episode may be framed as a clash of rival geographies, with zones marked by Sai Baba to be identified as generically sacred space, ostensibly free of sectarian loyalties. But if the image's address functioned in this way among a religiously diverse subaltern population, the claim proved unrecognizable in the eyes of the state.

Bio:
William Elison is an IHUM Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford. Trained at Chicago in the History of Religions Program, he specializes in the ethnography of religious life in subaltern India. He is currently working on a study of practices of marking and organizing sacred space in the slums, streets, and film studios of Mumbai. He has authored articles about local cultic practices and their mediation by public-cultural forms in slum-based and tribal communities and, in collaboration with two colleagues, has also begun writing a book about that landmark of 1970s Hindi cinema, Manmohan Desai's Amar Akbar Anthony.
