  • A shop in Kattanakere market gutted in fire during protests in Hassan on Monday.

  • Two persons were killed,including one in police firing, and four others injured on Monday in violence during protests over publication of an article penned by Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen in a vernacular daily.

    The authorities imposed dusk-to-dawn curfew in four trouble-hit localities in old Shimoga, the hometown of Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa.

    While one died in police firing, the other succumbed to injuries sustained in stone-pelting in hospital, police said.

    A 1500-strong crowd took out a procession to express their anger over the Kannada translation of Ms. Taslima’s article published on Sunday in a leading Kannada daily.

    The procession turned violent as some persons pelted stones on vehicles. At least 20 vehicles, including eight state transport corporation buses, were damaged.

    Police said as the situation threatened to go out of control, they opened fire, killing a person. Police said four others injured in stone-pelting have been hospitalised.

  • Hassan was also tense after 15,000 people held a protest rally and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

    Several vehicles were damaged in stone-pelting and some shops were torched, police said.

    In Shimoga, protesters burnt 12 two wheelers, two tractors, two auto rickshaws and pelted stones, police said.
    
    Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Shimoga and Hassan.
    
    Hassan SP Sharat Chandra said the protest was against the article published in the newspaper.
    
    Taslima in the article wrote that Mohammed Prophet was against burqa.

  • Tension gripped Uttar Pradesh's Badosarai town in Barabanki district Monday afternoon following a "minor clash" between Hindus and Muslims over Holi celebrations.
  • The clash between the two communities erupted when some Hindus, who were moving in a procession, tossed in the air coloured water-filled balloons, one of which hit a Muslim girl standing a few metres away from the procession.
    
    This infuriated members of the Muslim community and they resorted to pelting stone at the procession. Hindus, in the procession also retaliated. The timely intervention of security personnel brought the situation under control, police added.

  • राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के प्रमुख मोहन भागवत ने रविवार को कहा कि जो लोग भारतीय हैं वे हिंदू हैं और अगर कोई व्यक्ति हिंदू नहीं है तो वह भारतीय भी नहीं हो सकता। भारत केवल उसी हालत में तरक्की कर सकता है, जब हिंदुत्व के रास्ते पर चले। यहां संघ के हिंदू समागम कार्यक्रम के अवसर पर भागवत ने कहा कि हमारे लिए हिंदू शब्द का अर्थ किसी धर्म विशेष से नहीं बल्कि जीवन जीने की एक पद्धति से है।

  • राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ (आरएसएस) के सरसंघचालक मोहन राव भागवत ने आज कहा कि देश को जोड़ने वाला तत्व भाषा नहीं अनेकता में एकता है और इसका हिन्दुत्व ही मुख्य आधार है। हिन्दुत्व किसी धर्म अथवा परंपरा का नाम नहीं है, बल्कि यह हिन्दुस्थान की पहचान और उसका मुख्य नीति निर्देशक है।

  • शंकराचार्यो के विवाद को हल करने के लिए मातृसदन के गंभीर प्रयास रंग लाने लगे हैं। मातृसदन के आग्रह पर चारों पीठों के शंकराचार्यो की ओर से चारों पीठों पर आसीन शंकराचार्यो की जानकारी दी गई है। इस आधार पर मातृसदन के संस्थापक स्वामी शिवानंद ने शासन से व्यवस्था कराने की मांग की है ताकि शंकराचार्य स्वरूपानंद सरस्वती का शिविर उखडने की नौबत न आए। रविवार को मातृसदन में चारों पीठों के शंकराचार्यो की ओर से आए पत्रों का उल्लेख करते हुए स्वामी शिवानंद ने कहा कि चार मठों की ओर से स्पष्ट जवाब आ गया है। इसके अनुसार उत्तरनाम्नाय ज्योतिष्पीठ पर शंकराचार्य स्वरूपानंद सरस्वती, पूर्वानाम्नाय गोव‌र्द्धनपीठ पर शंकराचार्य स्वामी निश्चलानंद सरस्वती, दक्षिणाम्नाय श्रृंगेरी पीठ के शंकराचार्य स्वामी भारती तीर्थ और पश्चिमाम्नाय द्वारका शारदा पीठ के शंकराचार्य स्वामी स्वरूपानंद सरस्वती हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि चूंकि शंकराचार्यो के संबंध में कोई निर्णय आदि गुरु शंकराचार्य के अनुसार इन चारों पीठों के शंकराचार्य ही परस्पर विचार-विमर्श से निर्णय ले सकते हैं, ऐसे में अब विवाद का कोई विषय ही नहीं रह गया है और इसी आधार पर मेला प्रशासन को भी अपना निर्णय ले लेना चाहिए ताकि कुंभ की गरिमा बरकरार रह सके।
