Religion & Caste in India Census 2011

  • tags: no_tag

The Pioneer > Mani’s twisted Ramayan

    • Show time: Meenakshi Rao

      Raavan
Stars:Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Chiyaan Vikram, Govinda
      Showing At: Odeon & others
      Rated: 4/10
    • Abhishek tells us that Mani Ratnam’s most favourite phrase on the sets always is: “Make it real.” Strange. Because Raavan is far, far, far and far away from even a hint of reality. And, if that is not enough, the strange animal-human characterisation of his lead hero in Abhishek (he roars, he hisses, he yaps and he gives a maniacal look, not to mention his eyes that dialate like a doctor would want them for corneal examination) kind of makes you wonder what went wrong with the otherwise compelling Mani.
    • Only, the tale was skewed. Was it an indictment of the State exploitation of the rural poor which gives rise to Naxalites? Was it showing how there is a Ram in every Raavan and Raavan in every Ram, as his Sita (Aish) discovers by the end of the film?

Another matter though that Mani’s Ram looked and behaved more like Raavan and his Raavan, if he did not have that unexplained crazy streak in him, had shades of Ram — do-gooder, supremely sacrificial and a man of correctness. Another matter though that the real Raavan who was a pundit of knowledge, would turn in his grave hundred times if he were to know that a character played in his name was grossly illiterate!

Then there was Hanuman too — what Govinda was doing as Hanuman will puzzle you for the rest of the time you will spend thinking about it.
    • Adaptation? Love Story? Naxalism? Hostage drama? Or just an unblended mix of all this? You never can make up your mind. That’s not what a Mani Ratnam film should be summed up as.

Tension brews in Jammu & Kashmir over Amarnath yatra - dnaindia.com

      • Ishfaq-ul-Hassan / DNA
Srinagar: Battle lines are drawn once again between the Hurriyat hardliners and Hindu groups over the duration of this year annual Amarnath pilgrimage starting July 1 in Jammu and Kashmir.
    • Leading the charge is Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani who has revived the ghost of agitation by calling for shorter duration of pilgrimage for “saving the fragile environment” in the Himalayas.
    • His diatribe has pressed the raw nerve of Hindu groups in Jammu. “If any body tries to disrupt or create impediments in the yatra, he will be given befitting reply,” warned Leela Karan Sharma, former convener of Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti (SASS).

“If people want us to lead the charge, we will not hesitate in launching an agitation. I suggest Geelani not to poke his nose in our religion, otherwise it could backfire,” said Brigadier (retd) Suchet Singh, convener of SASS.

Drug developed by RSS body gets US patent

  • tags: no_tag

    • Nagpur, Jun 17 (PTI) An anti-cancer drug extracted from cow urine and developed by an affiliate of the RSS has got a US patent for the third time for its anti-genotoxicity properties, a senior official has said.

The drug developed by RSS-backed Go Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra had earlier got the US patent as a bio-enhancer with antibiotics and anti-cancer drugs.

The research for the drug brand named 'Kamdhenu Ark' was carried out jointly by the Anusandhan Kendra and National Environmental Engineer Research Institute (NEERI), Acting Director of NEERI Tapan Chakraborty said.

The research found that Re-distilled Cow Urine Distillate (RCUD) was useful for protecting and repairing DNA from oxidative damage, Chakraborty and Sunil Mansinghka of Kendra told reporters yesterday.

Oxidative DNA damage is a leading cause of ageing, cancer and other diseases.

ITBP discovers ancient route to Kailash Mansarovar

  • tags: no_tag

    • The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has discovered a lost trekking stretch connected to the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route and documented all related information in a book released Thursday.

The stretch, from Gala to Kathgodam, was discovered after a team of the ITBP's 7th battalion embarked on a project to trace those routes that once 'formed a part of the ancient route of the fabled Kailash-Mansarovar yatra', Commandant A.P.S. Nimbadia said.

Nimbadia, the chief of the battalion based at Mirthi in Uttarakhand's border district of Pithoragarh, was leading the team that conducted six expeditions to trace the route.

    • Nimbadia said the rediscovered route can serve as an alternative stretch to the pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, considered to be the abode of Hindu Lord Shiva. The mountain lies near the Mansarovar lake in Tibet.
    • Nimbadia said he hit upon the idea of exploring long-lost routes because pilgrims have to suffer a lot due to rains and landslides on the route that they take now.
    • 'I thought they could have been immediately rescued if we had even a slight idea about those long lost trekking routes forming a part of the ancient Kailash Mansarovar yatra route. In case of any calamity, we don't have alternative routes to provide relief to and rescue pilgrims. This route, if revived can be used in case of an emergency,' he said.
    • 'It is even said that Dogra warrior Zorawar Singh and his army followed the same route before they attacked Tibet and conquered it.'
    • ITBP Director General R.K. Bhatia released the book and praised the 'inspiring achievements' of Nimbadia.
