Right Angle: How the BJP lost the central plot (October 25, 2009)

  • tags: no_tag

    • If a large and important state such as Maharashtra is willing to indulge a party after five years of non-performance, and even ineptitude, it suggests that the Congress creed is fast turning into common sense. The Congress has become something akin to a default preference for peoples and communities who are not driven by either overriding zeal or a fierce sense of distinctiveness.

Yet, there is a flip side to this characteristically Hindu complacency. The Congress’ partial success in identifying itself as the party of the inoffensive middle ground has been accompanied by the corresponding decline of the BJP as the alternative pole of politics.

Right Angle: No point blaming Raj for Sena-BJP defeat (October 26, 2009)

    • The Congress may have benefited from the entry of another player that cut into the Shiv Sena-BJP votes but this vote-splitting will remain a part of the game as long as the first-past-the-post system exists. Of course, the Congress-NCP was also happy to indulge Raj because it undermined Uddhav Thackeray and the Shiv Sena. But these tactical manoeuvres cannot take away the fact that Raj did appeal to the beleaguered Marathi manoos of urban Maharashtra far more effectively than the Uddhav-led Shiv Sena could manage. Whereas Uddhav was trying to enlarge the social base of the Shiv Sena and transform it into a conventional regional party, Raj was appealing to the core instincts of the old Shiv Sena. The results showed that Uddhav’s social expansion scheme was undercut by losses in the Shiv Sena’s original strongholds. The Shiv Sena may have been reduced to fourth place, even below the BJP, but in terms of social reach and potential it is still well ahead of the MNS.
    • The results suggest that the Shiv Sena-BJP were a casualty of the larger loss of momentum that seems to be afflicting the NDA and the BJP in particular. The Congress has consistently nourished its own social constituency through a combination of Centrally-funded welfare schemes and symbolism (Rahul Gandhi’s cultivation of Dalits being a prime example).
    • That is because elections aren’t won by booth committees but by the popular mood. That is where the real disconnect lies.

A Gruesome Honor Killing in Mumbai | Faith Freedom International

    • According to the Chicago Tribune, “On May 31, 1994, Kifaya Husayn, a 16-year-old Jordanian girl, was lashed to a chair by her 32-year-old brother. He gave her a drink of water and told her to recite an Islamic prayer. Then he slashed her throat. Immediately afterward, he ran out into the street, waving the bloody knife and crying, ‘I have killed my sister to cleanse my honor.’ Kifaya’s crime? She was raped by another brother, a 21-year-old man.
    • In 2001, in Gujar Khan, Pakistan , Zahida Perveen’s husband attacked her, gouged out both her eyes, cut off her nose, and her ears. He wrongly suspected her of adultery.
    • According to Time magazine, in September 2003 in Iraq , Ali Jasib Mushiji, 17, shot his mother and half brother because he suspected them of having an affair and killed his 4-year-old sister because he thought she was their child.
    • One is shocked to know tha a Muslim father in Iran cut off his 7-year-old daughter’s head because he suspected that she had been raped by her uncle. The incident helps one understand on what grounds the Muslim girls are being murdered by her male family members as an act of honor killing and what kind of sexual offences are being committed in Muslim households.
    • Mehnaz Khan and the Maharastrian Hindu boy Vidyanand Jadahv were in love for past several years and eloped to a place called Panve and got married. When Munna Sardar Khan and Sehnaz Khan came to know that their daughter was living with her husband at Panvel, they went there and Sehnaz pleaded with Mehnaz to return home. Both Sehnaz and Munna Khan assured Mehnaz that, once she comes home, they would accept her marriage with Vidyanand.

However they succeeded to pursue Mehnaz and bring her to their South Mumbai home. But after she returned home nearly at 11 pm at night, Munna Khan strangulated Mehnaz to death with a towel while Sehnaz sat on her chest to prevent her from an escape.  According to the investigating officer Hinduram Patin, Munna Khan then dragged the body to the bathroom and cut it into 11 pieces. He also peeled off the skin from the victim’s face and disfigured it by cutting the nose so that no one could identify it after a possible discovery. He then dumped the pieces in a gunny bag and threw it near the Byculla bridge.

    • The incident help one gauge the degree of Islamic brainwashing which motivates even a mother to kill her own daughter.

    • BJP says day in and day out that it is because of it that Jammu & Kashmir got integrated with the rest of India. It appears to be a false and motivated propaganda. The fact is that it was the Congress which actually integrated the state with the rest of the country by taking several concrete measures. This is a statement of fact.

BJP was in power at the Centre for six long years between 1998 and 2004, and it did not extend even a single Central law to Jammu & Kashmir. It may appear ludicrous but it is a fact that its election manifesto for the Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections (2008) was totally silent on Article 370. Earlier in 1996, Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had even declared at Tangdhar (Kashmir) that Article 370 shall ever remain part of the Indian Constitution.
