I support the more general demand of the demonstrators that citizens must be consulted before laws and policies that affect them are framed and passed.

And yet why could I not actively join the demonstration at Jantar Mantar? First, the symbols and allies that the campaign chose disturbed me: the stage was decorated with a picture of Bharat Mata, almost identical to that propagated by the right-wing RSS.

White America’s collapsing birth rate is changing the face of the country

AMONG America’s three-year-olds, a revolution is afoot. Children of that age are turning the country’s demographics on its head. According to a recent study from the Census Bureau, the majority of them are now from groups normally considered minorities, chiefly Hispanics and blacks. The latest release of data from last year’s decennial census confirms that whites still constitute a slender majority, 54%, of those under 18, and a larger one, 64%, of the population as a whole. But America’s transformation into a much browner, more suburban, more southern and western place is rapid and relentless.

क्या आप जानते हैं कि सोनिया गाँधी किस धर्म का पालन करती हैं? निश्चित ही जानते होंगे, (गाँधी परिवार के अंधभक्तों को छोड़कर) पूरा देश जानता है कि एंटोनिया माईनो (Antonia Maino) उर्फ़ सोनिया गाँधी ईसाई धर्म का पालन करती हैं। UPA की अध्यक्षा, राष्ट्रीय सलाहकार समिति (National Advisory Council) की अध्यक्षा, सांसद इत्यादि होने के बावजूद, जब भी किसी सरकारी दस्तावेज, आधिकारिक भाषण अथवा कांग्रेस के अलावा किसी अन्य पार्टी के राजनैतिक नेता द्वारा जब भी कभी सोनिया गाँधी के “ईसाई” होने को रेखांकित करने की कोशिश की जाती है तो कांग्रेस पार्टी का समूचा “ऊपरी हिस्सा” हिल जाता है। सोनिया गाँधी को सार्वजनिक रूप से “ईसाई” कहने भर से कांग्रेसियों को हिस्टीरिया का दौरा पड़ जाता है, पता नहीं क्यों? जबकि यह बात सभी को पता है, फ़िर भी…

उल्लेखनीय है कि गत वर्ष 29 नवम्बर को पंजाब-हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट की बेंच ने हरियाणा के एक रिटायर्ड डीजीपी की याचिका को खारिज कर दिया था, जिसमें उन्होंने सोनिया गाँधी, राहुल गाँधी एवं प्रियंका-रॉबर्ट वढेरा के धर्म के बारे में जानकारी चाही थी। याचिकाकर्ता ने जनसंख्या रजिस्ट्रार से इन महानुभावों के धर्म की जानकारी माँगी थी, परन्तु देने से इंकार करने पर कोर्ट केस लगाया था। न्यायालय में जस्टिस मुकुल मुदगल और रंजन गोगोई की पीठ ने यह कहकर याचिका खारिज कर दी कि, “सम्बन्धित पक्ष किस धर्म का पालन करते हैं, यह उनका निजी मामला है…”।

हाल ही में कांग्रेस पार्टी के मुखपत्र “कांग्रेस संदेश” द्वारा भगत सिंह, राजगुरु एवं सुखदेव के 81वें शहीद दिवस पर प्रकाशित लेख में अमर शहीद सुखदेव थापर को जहाँ एक ओर जेपी साण्डर्स का “हत्यारा” बताया गया, वहीं भगतसिंह को “जाट सिख” और शिवराम राजगुरु को “देशस्थ ब्राह्मण” कहकर खामख्वाह इन अमर सेनानियों को जातिवाद के दलदल में घसीटने की घटिया कोशिश की है (Congress described freedom fighter's Caste), जो कि सिर्फ़ इनका ही नहीं, देश का भी अपमान है, हालांकि कांग्रेस पार्टी के लिये ऐसे “अपमान” कोई नई बात नहीं है… क्योंकि पार्टी का मानना है कि जिस नाम में “गाँधी-नेहरु” शब्द न जुड़ा हो, वह सम्माननीय हो ही नहीं सकता।

ऐसे में सवाल उठना स्वाभाविक है कि जब सोनिया गाँधी को “ईसाई” कहना कांग्रेसियों को गवारा नहीं है, तो इन महान स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों की “जाति” दर्शाकर, “हत्यारा” निरूपित करके, कांग्रेस क्या साबित करना चाहती है?
