  • A few weeks ago, I made a hurried list that broadly categorized contemporary Hindus based on certain general parameters. Gurcharan Das of India Unbound fame adds to this list by slotting himself into a new category: Liberal Hindu. Much of what he says in that post is along familiar, “safe Hindu” lines but he does offer some positive difference from the mundane grist that we have come to expect from self-proclaimed liberals. For the familiar stuff, this assertion is a fairly reflective sample.

    Hindu nationalists have appropriated my past and made it into a political statement of Hindutva.

  • Even if you grant the possibility that “Hindutva fanatics” have politicized Hinduism, there’s not a single instance where Hindu nationalists have prevented any Hindu from practising his/her own understanding/version/variant/tradition of Sanatana Dharma. Gurcharan Das’ assertion stems from incorrectly assuming a symmetry between Hindu “fanaticism” with the Islamic and/or Christian counterpart.
  • However, Das’s real failing is that he is trapped by the secularism-as-the-only-solution-to-all-our-problems mantra and is unable to see beyond it.

  • समदौंग रिन्पोछे ने चीन के इस तरह के मनमाने व्यवहार के लिए पश्चिमी देशों को दोषी करार देते हुए कहा कि पश्चिमी देश दुनिया में किसी भी देश के साथ संबंध तय करते समय आर्थिक व्यापार को महत्व देते हैं. आज चीन ने आर्थिक मामलों में पश्चिमी देशों को पूरी छूट दे रखी है इसलिए जब चीन की बात आती है तो पश्चिमी देश खुलकर नहीं बोल पाते हैं. इस मसले पर उन्होंने अमेरिका को भी अन्य पश्चिमी देशों जैसा ही बताया.
  • उन्होंने कहा कि आज पूरी दुनिया बीजिंग से डरी हुई दिखाई देती है. उन्होंने अंग्रेजी के एक मुहावरे का उदाहरण देते हुए बताया कि आज दुनिया में ऐसी नीति चल रही है कि जो मजबूत है उसे ही जीने का अधिकार है.

  • But there is no criminal case until a crime has been committed. That is the rub. Law enforcement bodies do not prevent crime except as a by-product of catching people who commit it and putting them in jail. Their mind-set is the solution of crime after it has occurred. Your local police department will not prevent your murder. It will solve it after you are dead. That might satisfy society’s need to provide some modest form of security to those who survive but it is cold comfort to the victim.
  • That is why the FBI is particularly unsuited to take on the responsibility of interrogating terrorists and preventing terrorism. If the object of your work is to find out who did what to whom so you can present sufficient evidence to a court to demonstrate that a crime has been committed, you have all the time in the world to bond with someone who might have the information you seek. There is no urgency. If you can otherwise hold him, you can take as long as you want to see if you can tease information out of him that will help your case.
  • Intelligence gathering, in contrast to law enforcement, is calculated to develop information that enables us to anticipate events before they occur. It is intended to determine what enemies are planning and to disrupt those plans even if we cannot prove, to a legal certainty, that the plans would ever have been carried out. That is the difference between the function of the FBI and that of the CIA. The FBI can act only on information that is so concrete that it would withstand the scrutiny of a federal judge charged with enforcing Constitutional norms. The CIA is not similarly constrained. Nor should it be.
  • In the first place, of course, foreign nationals operating in foreign countries are not entitled to American Constitutional protections. In the second, in questioning them, we are less interested in what they have done than we are in what their comrades intend to do. The object of that sort of interrogation is not what the FBI is organized or trained to do. But it is what the CIA was, as a matter of organizational culture, intended to do.

  • Work on the controversial Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project in the Palk Strait between Sri Lanka and India has halted again after the last dredger digging the channel was pulled out of service, a media report said.

    State-run Dredging Corp. of India Ltd (DCI) removed its dredger—a specialized ship used to deepen the channels of ports and harbours—from the project when its four-year contract with Sethusamudram Corp. Ltd ended on 27 July.
    
    "Nobody knows when the work will start again," the newspaper said.
    
    "We are trying to revive the dredging contract between DCI and Sethusamudram Corp. Ltd," a shipping ministry official said, but he could not give a time frame for reviving the contract.
    
    Meanwhile, dredging continued on the non-controversial Palk Straits area.
