    • Islamists in Kerala have launched an organised campaign for converting girls belonging to other religions into Islam. Police believe that Islamist organisation NDF (presently Popular Front of India) and its student outfit Campus Front could be behind this campus-based campaign. An investigation is presently on into the matter on the instructions of the Kerala High Court.

Information about this planned campaign came out in the open after two girls in an MBA college in Pathanam-thitta, who had gone missing some days ago, were produced in the HC on a habeas corpus petition. Girls told the court that they were taken to a place in Kozhikode, where a group led by Campus Front activists Shehenshah and Sirajuddeen forced them to convert into Islam and sign marriage contracts.
    • n a petition, Jacob Thomas of Pallikkal, Kottarakkara, Kollam and K Madhavan of Peroorkada, Thiruvananth-apruam, parents of the girls, had alleged that their daughters were detained by one Shehansha of Pettah, Pathana-mthitta. Girls were doing a project after completing MBA.
    • The police are now in the process of verifying the reports that some Hindu organisations are preparing to counter the Islamists’ designs. A report regarding this would be submitted in the High Court early next month.

However, sources in the police refused to confirm reports regarding an Islamic group specialising in luring young girls for converting into Islam. Reports had appeared in a section of the media in January last that religious Romeos had converted more than 4,000 girls through such designs.

    • Is Kerala moving towards another 1947?
    • C. I. Issac
    • On 15 August 2009, Justice Cyriac Joseph of the Supreme Court, while addressing the International Laity Conference organized by Commission for Laity of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church [CLSMCC] in Kochi, openly declared his commitment to the church is higher than to the judiciary! He said there was no decline in his affection and love for the Church [PTI, 15 August 2009; Janmabhoomi Daily, Kottayam, 17 August 2009]. The speech is undoubtedly a clear violation of his oath of allegiance.
    • Earlier he proved his commitment to the Church with an unconstitutional visit in the laboratory where narco tests were conducted on two priests and a nun accused of the murder of Sr. Abhaya on 27 March 1997 in Pius X Convent at Kottayam. Justice Joseph made an unauthorised visit in the Forensic Lab at Bangalore on 23 May 2008, and viewed the CD of the test – a gross violation of legal ethics.
    • Justice Cyriac Joseph was then Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. The CBI has reported the matter to the designated court [Janmabhoomi, Kottayam, 11 August 2009]. The purpose of his visit to the Lab is shrouded in mystery because the High Court of Kerala had noticed some dishonest editing of the CD!
    • The Catholic Church is planning to purchase 10,000 acres [approx. 24 sq km] of land in the Konkan area on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border to build an exclusive Catholic township, a matter of discussion in Church circles in recent years. This was formally proposed in the recent Assembly of CLSMCC at Kochi on 15 August, and the response was very positive. This was identified by the council as “second migration.” The first migration took place between 1920 and 1960 wherein Kottayam-based Christians occupied the revenue and forest lands of Northern Kerala and Southern Karnataka.
    • The above picture is sufficient to understand the forthcoming changes and their impact over the nation as a whole. The majority Hindu community is highly politicized and is not in a position to understand the depths of the problems it will face in the near future. Hence, for the sake of national integrity, the intervention of Hindus in the rest of India is unavoidable in this alarming situation of Kerala.

    • British efforts to clamp down on jihadist terrorists are showing partial success
    • The police and intelligence services launched an enormous investigation to prevent the attacks, employing 200 people to provide round-the-clock surveillance. Operation Overt was cut short when Rashid Rauf of Birmingham, believed to be an al-Qaeda link man for the plotters in Pakistan, was arrested there, allegedly at American instigation. This caused the British to close in earlier than planned, perhaps at the cost of gathering more explicit evidence.

Shadow Warrior: myth of moderate malaysia

Taken together, these cases illustrate two issues--both central to the debate about Islam and modernity--that Malaysia is struggling to come to terms with. Can a Muslim majority live with a non-Muslim minority as equals, or must the former be explicitly dominant--in law as well as in day-to-day life? And can Muslims reconcile piety with a culture where the rights of the individual (say, to order a beer) are given precedence over communal beliefs?
