    • Ahmedabad:
    • A bridegroom was allegedly kidnapped by the brothers of his sister-in-law, a Muslim, to ‘avenge’ her marriage.

The groom, Bharat Ghalchar of Dhanera Taluka in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, was on his way to the bride’s house in Ahmedabad district on Sunday when Arif Shah Sai, Habib Shah Sai, brothers of Bharat’s sister-in-law Shabnam, and ten unidentified men stopped his marriage procession near Deesa and abducted him.

The kidnappers have reportedly demanded that their sister be handed over to them. Shabnam married Bharat’s brother Sanjay around six months ago against the wishes of her family.

    • The abducted man’s in-laws wait for the marriage procession to arrive at their home in Zariwala chali in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
    • Twelve people reportedly stopped the private bus near Deesa and abducted the groom as one of the accused was unhappy with the marriage of his sister to the groom’s brother. The accused has threatened to kill the youth if his sister is not released.
    • Two of the accused have been identified as Arif Shah Sai and Habib Shah Sai, while the rest are yet to be identified. The investigation in the case has been handed over to the Patan deputy superintendent of police.
    • Banaskantha Superintendent of Police H G Patel said: “The incident is fallout of Sanjay’s marriage with a girl from another community. Shabnam’s brother, Habib, has been pressurising the Ghalchar family to send her back for quite some time. But Shabnam is unwilling to return.”
