The electronic voting machine (EVM) should be redesigned to produce a receipt, as in an automated teller machine, after a vote was cast, said the president of Janata Party, Subramanian Swamy, on Thursday.
Addressing a news conference here, Dr. Swamy claimed that the EVM, like any electronic machine, was bound by the Information Technology Act and it was mandatory to provide a receipt after every use. This receipt of confirmation could be dropped by voters in a nearby box, which could be verified in case of dispute. This would serve as a safeguard against misuse of EVMs in favour of a particular candidate. Dr. Swamy clarified that he was not against the use of EVMs in elections but against their misuse.
