EU team forced to cancel Kandhamal judges’ meet-Asian Age

The visiting European Union (EU) diplomats’ delegation was on Friday "forced" to cancel their meeting with the judges of the fast track courts at Phulbani in Orissa’s Kandhamal district following protests from the local lawyers. All the riot cases reported in the district are being tried in these courts.
"The EU team sought an audience with the judges of the fast track courts for discussion on riot related cases. A letter was issued by the Kandhamal administration to the district judge in this regard. We strongly opposed any such meeting as it could amount to interference in the judiciary", P.K. Patra, president of Phulbani Bar Association, told this newspaper.
"It is totally inappropriate for them to meet the judges at a time when Kandhamal riot cases are being tried in these courts," he said.
