    A hoarding an MNS leader posted in Mahim, north-central Mumbai, to mark the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks, omits National Security Guard commandos Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Havaldar Gajendra Singh Bisht who lost their lives battling terrorists at the Taj Mahal hotel [ Images ] and Nariman House respectively.

    Both heroes, Bengaluru-based Unnikrishnan and Dehra Dun native Bisht, were honoured with the Ashok Chakra, the country's highest award for valour during peace-time, this Republic Day.

    The MNS hoarding has photographs of all the other security personnel killed during the 26/11 attacks.

  • Superimposed on the rivalries, conflicts and prejudices that have characterised Persian-Arab relations for centuries, matters have been further complicated by the roles of the US and Israel, which significantly influence developments in the region. While Jews and Persians have historically been allies, Iran’s Revolutionary Government has adopted a policy of hostility towards Israel and the US. The Israelis, in turn, have covert links with Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Israel has stridently opposed Iran’s nuclear programme, claiming that Tehran has ambitions to make nuclear weapons. The Obama Administration is trying to find a solution that permits Iran to enrich uranium, while ensuring that it neither qualitatively not quantitatively possesses enough highly enriched uranium to make nuclear weapons. Israel, however, continues to warn that if Iran, which has threatened to “wipe Israel off the map”, is not stopped, it will strike militarily at Iranian nuclear facilities. Any such action could well lead to Iran seeking to cut off access to two-thirds of the world’s oil supplies coming from the Persian Gulf, sparking a global economic crisis.
    
    India has a vital stake in the stability of the region, extending from Pakistan and Afghanistan, across the Straits of Hormuz. An estimated four million Indians now live in the six Arab Gulf kingdoms — Oman, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. India gets around 75 per cent of its oil supplies from these countries. Indians living in these countries remit the bulk of the $ 55 billion that India gets as remittances. Tensions and conflicts in this region could send global oil prices skyrocketing. This will adversely affect our balance of payments and send our foreign exchange reserves spiralling downwards, as we already have an adverse balance of trade of around $ 120 billion.
  • Given the complexities of the emerging situation in its western neighbourhood, India will have to steer clear of getting involved in Persian-Arab rivalries. But, at the same time, given its close relations with Iran, Israel and the US and as a member of the Board of Governors of the IAEA, India should play a more active role in resolving the stand-off resulting from Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Samuel Huntington had prophesised a “clash of civilisations” between the Christian and the Muslim worlds. What we are witnessing in our neighbourhood is a clash between Persian and Arab cultures, superimposed on a sectarian Shia-Sunni divide.

    The business of remote tutoring, or hiring a qualified tutor over the internet, had an estimated worth of $250m in 2006 and is expected to be worth $2 billion by 2015, a 2007 study by the global knowledge firm Evalueserve shows.

  • Remote tutoring has opened up a world of opportunities for India’s well qualified teachers, especially for those in rural and remote towns, where job opportunities are scarce. Twenty per cent of its tutors are PhD holders and 60 per cent hold master’s degrees. Many of them are retired civil servants and housewives looking to earn some extra cash.
  • The teachers, who earn between 8,000 rupees (Dh629) and 20,000 rupees a month based on assignment and qualifications, are only expected to know English, have knowledge about their subject and own a computer.

  • Interestingly, I never got any summons from the Commission although it questioned 1,500 witnesses and virtually every journalist who was present in the Ram Mandir/Babri Masjid complex that day. In its report, the Commission narrates at length the alleged manhandling of Ruchira Gupta who was reporting for Business India those days. It reproduces without verification her (patently false) claim that she was manhandled by kar sewaks and her clothes torn. Had the Commission summoned me I would have testified under oath that nothing of the kind happened. She accompanied me, despite my pleas to the contrary, when I decided to visit the structure under destruction. In fact, she was saved by an assistant to Pramod Mahajan who pushed her out of the way because some kar sewaks got agitated by her remarks and demanded to know who she was, doubting her claim to be a kar sewak despite the saffron bandana she wore to pretend being a member of the demolition squad.
    
    I was not remotely associated with the BJP those days and my reports in HT were factual and non-commentative, unlike those of my Leftist compatriots. Those two reports are still widely referred to by Western researchers into the demolition and its aftermath. Yet, the Commission never thought it fit to call me for evidence. But then, I am in august company. Justice Liberhan who liberally savages Atal Bihari Vajpayee in his report, never called him to testify either. After the leak of the document, Liberhan even denied on camera that Vajpayee had been pilloried. I can excuse the retired judge. If anybody takes 17 years to compile a litany of half-truths and untruths, memory can well play truant. Unless, of course, the report’s authorship itself is in some doubt!

  • उत्तर प्रदेश के जौनपुर ज़िले के एक गाँव कुल्हनामऊ में ग़रीबी के कारण दलितों का अंतिम संस्कार हिन्दू रीति रिवाज़ों के अनुसार न कर उन्हें ज़मीन में दफ़नाया जाता है.

    मृतकों को दफ़नाने के लिए गाँव में ही बाकायदा एक क़ब्रिस्तान बना हुआ है .

    गाँव के 80 वर्षीय बुज़ुर्ग मुरली बताते हैं कि अंग्रेजों के ज़माने से यहाँ मृतकों को दफ़नाया जाता रहा है. पहले यहाँ सिर्फ साधुओं को ही दफ़नाया जाता था लेकिन बाद में गाँव के ग़रीब लोग अपने संबंधियों को यहाँ दफ़नाने लग गए .

    अंतिम संस्कार के लिए शवों को दफ़ना देना एक सस्ता विकल्प है. मुरली के परिवार के सभी रिश्तेदार गाँव के इसी क़ब्रिस्तान में दफ़न हैं.

  • लेकिन मुरली यह कहना नहीं भूलते, "अगर अच्छा खाना मिले तो कोई ख़राब खाना नहीं खाएगा. अगर मेरा अंतिम संस्कार हिन्दू रीति रिवाज़ों के अनुसार हो तो मैं अपने आपको धन्य मानूँगा."
  • वे चाहते हैं कि सरकार इस ओर ध्यान दे. वे कहते हैं, " जीवन तो जैसे तैसे कट ही जाएगा लेकिन हम अपना परलोक नहीं बिगाड़ना चाहते हैं."

  • But why did the Congress open the locks?
    They were playing the anti-Sikh, pro-Hindu card. In 1999, Rajiv Gandhi launched his election campaign from Ayodhya. The sants began to unite the akharas for the stone-laying ceremony.

    How did you become accused number 19 in the Liberhan report on the masjid demolition?
    I came to the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in 1988. At that time, the BJP was keen on postponing the shilanyas as it wanted to tie up with VP Singh. But the VHP wanted the shilanyas with or without the alliance. My effort as general secretary was that both should happen. In 1990, the kar seva started.

  • How much money was raised for the temple?
    We raised Rs 9 crore. Stones were brought and carved. They are still there at Karsevakpuram in Ayodhya. Kar seva was planned for December 6, 1991. Close to 125,000 people came from across the country. They were to take sand and stones to the shilanyas site.

    Where was this?
    It was near the structure. But people were not ready for just a symbolic kar seva. They were frustrated and their leaders could not fathom this. Only 30 per cent of them were from the Sangh. Others were just kar saveks and had no concern for the organisation. My apprehension is that some people from Andhra Pradesh, Telengana and Maharashtra were bent on defying the Sangh Parivar. Once they started attacking, others joined. It was a natural resentment.

  • You could have built a small shrine near the structure without whipping up hysteria.
    The mandir would not have been possible without moblisation. But it was possible without demolition. So, Advani said after this that we lost an important issue and that it was his saddest day. I said it should not be condemned or condoned.

    Why saddest day? Didn’t it help BJP?
    No, the BJP lost all five state elections after that. After 1992, it became an untouchable party.

  • Why did you quit the party?
    I was general secretary till 2000 and was wondering what I could do to create space for ideology. But the BJP remained power-centric. Atalji and Advaniji were liberal democrats and believed an ideological party could not come to power. On the one side, there was domination of foreign ecomomic forces, and on the other, the government and the party were not alive to these. Checks and balances were missing. So, first I took study leave and delved into the impact of globalisation. Now, I am building on my conclusions. The foundation is ready in the form of the Rashtriya Swabhiman Andolan, which is a political organisation, and Rashtriya Morcha, which is agitational. We will fight elections in 2014.

    What do you thinkthe BJP should do now?
    The Congress and the BJP are both pro-foreign and pro-rich. They should merge. They are not allowing space to pro-poor voices. If you do this, you are leading people to anarchist forces.

    If you were to go to the BJP, what would you do to repair it?
    There are too many conflicts and contradictions. No one can repair it. From Shahnawaj to Varun Gandhi, it’s a 180-degree-wide spectrum. You have Murli Manohar Joshi and Murlidar Rao on the one end on economic policies and Advani on the other. You have Modi welcoming SEZs and malls to wreck the party. He cares two hoots about the Sangh Parivar. You also have Shivraj Chauhan, who can’t live without the Sangh Parivar. All relationships are need-based

  • Kameshwar Chaupal, who laid the foundation stone for a proposed Ram Mandir at the shilanyas site at Ayodhya in 1989, has said that the Ayodhya movement has lost its electoral appeal. And the BJP, which has to blame itself for it, should have included “roti (livelihood) with Ram.”

     

    Chaupal, a Dalit (Paswan, by caste), has been a much-feted swayamsevak in the BJP/RSS, and the Sangh Parivar has always maintained that “his shilanyas act showed that the RSS-BJP’s Hindutva was an inclusive, all-encompassing idea.

  • The symbol of Ram then should not have been reduced to the BJP when leaders from even the Congress, like Dau Dayal Khanna and Karan Singh, were also involved in it,” Chaupal told The Sunday Express today.
  • The BJP MLC also said that the BJP ideally should have included roti(livelihood) along with Ram in its political campaign. Asked why Chaupal agreed to remain in the BJP, and contest Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, before being nominated as an MLC (he is serving his second term as MLC), he said: “If all of us in the BJP had a common opinion (on the Ram Temple issue, and other issues), its fate would have been somewhat different.”

  • Lord Venkateswara's sanctuary atop Tirumala hills is set to glitter more than ever.

    Three hundred kg of gold will turn the richest shrine in India into a literal golden temple.

    The Rs 1,000-crore project - the entire exterior and interior of the main temple will be plated with gold - began on Wednesday.

    The work, christened Ananda Nilayam-Ananta Swarnamayam, is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.

  • There are enough incentives for the generous devotees.

    Those offering one kg gold or more will be offered the privilege of a free VIP darshan every year, besides free laddu prasadam and accommodation in the temple guest houses.

    The TTD could also have pulled off the gold plating all by itself, considering its phenomenal wealth. It receives an annual donation of 350 kg only in gold, has a yearly outlay of roughly Rs 2,000 crore and has received Rs 50,000 crore in offerings over the last 1,100 years.

    The shrine attracts, on an average, 50,000 pilgrims every day.

  • The VHP had opposed the plan of gold plating the temple, saying it was "an interference in the religious nature" of the structure.
  • In a letter to Adhikesavulu, VHP international working president S. Vedantam had said covering temple walls with gold would damage the inscriptions. "There are invaluable treasures of our tradition and history in these inscriptions."

  • AFTER DECEMBER 6, 1992, the Sangh Parivar and the BJP overnight became the Indian media’s Enemy Number One. This was not on account of the Fourth Estate arrogating to itself the role of a custodian of India’s multicultural inheritance but because frenzied kar sevaks, irked by what they perceived was the media’s onesided coverage of the dispute in Ayodhya, chose to beat up photographers (remember this took place before the invasion of the TV crews) carrying out their professional duties. The relationship between the media and saffron outfits turned so sour that when the police unleashed water cannons on BJP demonstrators who tried to violate a ban on a scheduled rally on Delhi’s Boat Club Lawns in February 1993, a gaggle of journalists actually cheered and muttered ‘serves you right’.

  • In a larger sense, the Liberhan report is unlikely to revive interest in the Ayodhya dispute. Despite the grandstanding by the VHP and Togadia’s apparent willingness to mount the gallows for the sake of Lord Ram, India has moved on from the decade in which mandir fought Mandal and Muslim. There may still be a Hindu desire to see a grand Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya but the nation is not going to do anything dramatic about it. The makeshift Ram temple surrounded by armed guards and steel barricades is likely to define the Ayodhya landscape for the foreseeable future.

  • भारत विभाजन के बाद पूर्वी पाकिस्तान [अब बाग्लादेश] में साप्रदायिक हिंसा और र्दुव्यवहार झेलने वाले जिन तीन सौ बंगाली हिंदू शरणार्थी परिवारों को भारत की नागरिकता देकर जिला मुख्यालय से 38 किलोमीटर दूर श्रीपुर में बसाया गया था, वे अब अपनों के बीच बेगाने हैं। 46 वर्ष बाद भी इनके साथ सामान्य सलूक नहीं किया जाता। उनको मिली जमीन पर दबंगों का कब्जा है। वे धर्म, जाति और भाषा के आधार पर राज्य में किसी का सुनिश्चित थोक वोट नहीं बन पाये हैं, इसलिए कोई उनका पुरसाहाल नहीं है।

    दूसरी तरफ इसी राज्य के सीमावर्ती जिलों में बड़ी संख्या में घुसपैठ कर आने वाले बाग्लादेशी किसी न किसी तरह नागरिकता प्राप्त कर स्थानीय आबादी के लिए न सिर्फ मुसीबत बन गए हैं, बल्कि राजनीति को भी प्रभावित कर रहे हैं। श्रीपुर में बसाये गए लोगों की आजीविका का मुख्य साधन सरकार से मिली थोड़ी सी जमीन पर खेती और मजदूरी है।

  • ये लोग सरकार की पहले से मिली जमीन पर झोपड़ी बनाकर आसपास के लोगों के साथ घुल मिलकर रहने लगे। परंतु आज सरकारी सुविधा के अभाव में इनके सामने विकट समस्या खड़ी हो गयी है। हद तो यह कि इन्हें नागरिकता मिलने के बाद भी बाग्लादेशी शरणार्थी कहा जाता है।

  • I had reached Ayodhya on the morning of  December 5, 1992 to witness, what was described as 'a rehearsal' of the much publicised kar seva that was to follow 24 hours later. That was meant to mark a token commencement of the construction of the much-debated Ram temple at the spot where a foundation stone had been laid at six years earlier.

    The proposed ritual was incredibly simple -- kar sevaks arriving from different corners of the country were to march down to the banks of the river Sarayu, barely a kilometre away, carry a fistful of sand and drop it in a pit specially dug for the purpose close to the site of the shilaniyas (foundation stone) carried out in 1986 during the Rajiv Gandhi [ Images ] regime. Simultaneously 101 saffron-clad sadhus were to knock their hammers on the specially erected concrete platform overlooking the disputed structure of the Babri Masjid. The fact that this drill was followed quite religiously led everyone to foresee a boring uneventful day ahead.

    The kar sevaks came in their turns and followed the announced programme. That was enough to make everyone believe  that  the saffron forces had come in for a major climbdown by settling for a symbolic kar seva.

    Not only the local authorities but even media persons from  different corners of the globe were willing to actually believe that the saffron brigade comprising the activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party [ Images ] and its allies, the Bajrang Dal, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and  their common mastermind, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh -- had given up plans of  undertaking any drastic step.

  • Coming back to the scene on December 5, 1992, the day passed off peacefully. The day's only exciting event was the test drill by smartly turned out men of the then newly raised Rapid Action Force in their colourful gear. They covered the 7 km distance from Faizabad to Ayodhya in barely five minutes -- an unparalleled feat that not only evoked wide applause but also renewed confidence among the masses that nothing untoward would be allowed to happen.

    Officials patted their backs for such a 'high level' of preparedness, for any eventuality on the following day.

  • Even as the countdown began for the final showdown on the morning of December 6, no one suspected the intentions of the kar sevaks.
    
    Everything appeared to go as per the rehearsal until about 1130 hrs when a batch of kar sevaks, raising passionate Hindutva slogans sought to break through the human chain that was formed by RSS workers, to enclose the entire cemented platform.

    The idea, according to the local organisers, was to keep everybody other than the select band of 101 sadhus from stepping onto the platform. After all, these sadhus alone were detailed to perform the symbolic kar seva by knocking their hammers on the platform.
    
    However, the insistence of the kar sevaks to break the cordon led to a clash between them and the RSS volunteers on guard. Soon, a few local mahants (priests) led by Gyan Das, the chief priest of Hanuman [ Images ] Garhi  (Ayodhya's oldest temple) also moved in to assist the volunteers in keeping the kar sevaks away. The volunteers got thrashed by the kar sevaks for their trouble.

    What worsened the situation at this juncture was the announcement over the public address system, asking the people to stop beating each other. "Please do not beat up the kar sevaks; after all they are our own people." Far from bringing down tempers, this announcement provoked other batches of  kar sevaks to rush towards the concrete structure.

    Suddenly a huge band of kar sevaks from Andhra Pradesh and Maharastra, reached the spot, ready to teach the volunteers a lesson. A free for all ensued.

  • The clash with mediapersons allowed more bands of kar sevaks to converge on the platform. They headed straight for the mosque. The steel barricading that stood as the barrier proved no hurdle for them. In fact, many of them managed to pull out the steel pipes used in the barricade and charged at the structure. Soon there were thousands of kar sevaks armed with steel pipes or iron rods, swarming across the place and banging at the 16th century structure.

The news is that radical Islam has taken roots in the country. Osama bin Laden is a popular hero. People identify with the Chechen and Afghan wars.

  • Gentle Islam has begun to make way for the hardliner. Sharia laws have gained ground. Tolerance is down. Democratic values are questioned. Can they be any good because they are not Sharia-compliant? Onion domes of mosques can be found all over the landscape. The liberal education system faces serious threat from the madrasas. Artists are under attack. Popular music is frowned upon because it is not Islamic. Women, and even little girls, have taken to the jilbab to veil their faces.

    Deep down in their heart, the hardliners know it doesn’t fit with their traditional way of life.

  • the Islam now on display in Indonesia is of the West Asian variety — women should be stoned to death for adultery and thieves need to have their hands cut off. Jehad, or religious war, is a recurring theme.

    The world of the believer, of course, is split into two: Us and them, the believers and the non-believers. That the rest of the world — Christians, Zionists and Hindus — is out to tarnish the image of Muslims is a constant refrain.

  • A five-member European Union (EU) delegation that arrived in Srinagar on a two-day visit to assess the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, met various separatist leaders on Tuesday.

     

    Led by Sweden Ambassador to India, Lars Olof Lindgren, the team included Belgian Ambassador Jean M. Deboutte, Spanish Ambassador Ion de la Riva, Second Secretary (Political Affairs) in the Swedish embassy Oscar Schlyter and EU Ambassador Danielle. They discussed issues relating to human rights violation in the state.

     

    The delegation met Mohammed Yasin Malik, the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).

  • The delegation also met with Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chairman of the separatist All Parties Hurriyat (freedom) conference.

     

    Lord Olof Lindgren, the head of the European Union delegation, said they were concerned about the human rights violation in Kashmir. "Well, there are a lot of human rights issue that we are looking into. I cannot go into the details of those but those are of concern to the European Union and we discussed them with the Indian government and we have met the Human Rights Commissioner in the state. So we will follow these things with interest like we follow the situation in all parts of India," added Lord Olof Lindgren.

  • ग्रामीण इस बात पर एकमत हैं कि इस गुरुद्वारे को बनाने के लिए शिरोमणि गुरुद्वारा कमेटी, किसी अन्य गांव अथवा संस्था से किसी प्रकार का सहयोग नहीं लिया जाएगा। गांव के किसान इसके निर्माण में प्रति एकड़ 200 रुपए छमाही फसल पर देंगे जबकि अन्य वर्ग के लोग श्रद्धानुसार आर्थिक सहयोग करेंगे। फिलहाल ग्रामीणों द्वारा अपने स्तर पर दिए गए 15 लाख रुपए के आर्थिक योगदान के बूते पर इस गुरुद्वारे की चारदीवारी का निर्माण पूरा कर लिया गया है।

  • शहर में अव्यवस्थित आटो की समस्या पर बुधवार अखिल भारतीय हिंदू सुरक्षा समीति ने जसपाल भट्टी स्टाइल में कटाक्ष किया। समीति के सदस्य सड़क के किनारे एक तंबू गाड़कर आटो के लिए फाइनेंस आफिस खोलकर बैठ गए।

    
    
    

    उनका कहना था कि उनकी कंपनी की ओर से लुधियाना के बेरोजगार युवकों को आटो लेकर दिए जाएंगे। क्योंकि शहर में आटो चलाने के लिए किसी लाइसेंस या परमिट की जरूरत नहीं पड़ती। जिस व्यक्ति की मासिक आय दो हजार रुपये होगी, उसे कंपनी आटो फाइनेंस करेगी।

    
    
    

    उनकी कंपनी के आटो का नाम डॉन होगा, जिसे चलाने वाले को लुधियाना के बेस्ट नागरिक के अवार्ड से भी नवाजा जाएगा। असल में यह प्रदर्शन समीति की ओर से शहर में आटो से प्रदूषण, सड़क जाम व अन्य समस्याओं की तरफ प्रशासन का ध्यान दिलाने के लिए किया गया था।

VHP has asked the DC and the police to immediately raid the areas and avoid untoward incidents. Office-bearers of VHP, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and Marwadi Association have jointly submitted the memorandum.

  • A Malaysian woman is fighting to establish that she is a Hindu, denying a claim by the government’s social welfare department that she converted to Islam in 1983.

    Siti Hasnah Vangarama Abdullah, who goes by her original name S. Banggarma, 27, was issued a conversion certificate when she was seven years old in 1989. Her lawyer Gooi Hsiao Leung said: ‘Clearly, you cannot convert twice.’

    The certificate lists Banggarma and her younger sister as Muslim. Banggarma, however, says that her younger sister was not even born at that time.

  • Purnima Maheshwari trembles with rage when she recalls the horrific death of her two elder brothers — 23-year-old Ram Kothari and 21-year-old Sharad Kothari. They were killed in police firing while performing ‘symbolic’ kar seva at Ayodhya in 1990, two years before Babri Masjid was brought down.

  • “We were made to believe that it was only a matter of time for the temple to be built. My brothers believed it and were ready to risk their lives for the cause. Though the BJP rode to power on the temple issue, it conveniently swept it under the carpet. It hurts very much to realize that my brothers and hundreds others like them were taken for a ride,” said Maheshwari.
    
    Ram and Sharad were active RSS workers and students of Umesh Chandra College. They had been gearing up for kar seva ever since L K Advani announced his ‘rath yatra’ in mid-1990.
  • “It was a bolt from the blue since everything was apparently peaceful in Ayodhya. There was no news of any clash or firing on TV. Neither did we expect any trouble for it was supposed to be just a symbolic kar seva and not the real one that happened two years later,” said Maheshwari.

  • चोरीछुपे अफजल खान के वध का पोस्टर लगाकर भागने वाले को मुम्बई पूरे दिन खोजती रही, तो मुम्बई महानगरपालिका के लोग इस तरह के बैनर, पोस्टर निकलने का काम करते रहे। दोनों महकमों के लोगों की नजरें पूरे दिन जमी रहीं, कुल मिलाकर मंगलवार का दिन शांति से बीत गया।

  • उन्होंने कहा कि महाकुंभ आ रहा है और संतों की दिशा—निर्देश पर यह आंदोलन फिर से शुरू किया जाएगा। उन्होंने कहा कि मस्जिद ढहाने का कार्य एक माह में भी नहीं हो सकता था, जिसे कार सेवकों ने पांच घंटे में कर दिया था। जब राम फिर से आह्वान करेंगे, तब मंदिर भी बन जाएगा। उसके लिए हिंदू समाज तैयार है। जिस दिन मुसलमान राम मंदिर, कृष्णजन्म भूमि और कांशी मंदिर से अपने दावा हटा लेंगे, तब हिंदू व मुसलमानों में भ्रातत्व प्रेम जागेगा, जो अमिट होगा।
